France is the host nation for the Women's World Cup in 2019, with matches taking place in nine cities throughout the country. The tournament opened on June 7 and will conclude on July 7 with the Final at the Stade de Lyon.
The 2019 Women's World Cup field will consist of 24 teams at the start of the tournament. Twenty-three nations made the field through a qualification process, while France received automatic entry into the tournament for being the host nation.
The tournament begins with the Group Stage, where the 24 teams are split into six groups of four (Groups A–G). The four teams within each group play each other one time — teams receive three points for a win, one point for a tie and no points for a loss. The two teams who earn the most points in each group advance to the Round of 16, along with the top-four third-place teams. Starting with the Round of 16, also called the "Knockout Round," teams are matched up based on where they finished in the Group Stage. From this point forward, only the winning teams advance through to the quarterfinals, semifinals and ultimately the final match to crown the winner.
The United States has won the event three times to lead all nations. The USWNT won the inaugural event in 1991, won again in 1999, and was again victorious at the most recent tournament in 2015. Germany has won the event twice, while Japan and Norway each have one victory.
The event has been held every four years since its inception in 1991.
