The Perfect Super Shoe For All Runners

Bought my first Pro 4 in February while preparing for the Comrades marathon, as a new runner, alas, with some potential and an appetite for spending time on the road pushing myself. With the first Pro 4, I improved my marathon PB from around 4hrs, to now sub 3:15 territory. It’s a super comfortable shoe, very fast, explosive, retains energy and enables high end speed late. I do lots of elevation based training, and it’s like heaven when you go up a difficult hill, and also when you descent… On the flats, you pretty much float in tempo at any effort. I bought this one because my first one had to retire at 970km.

Unstable And Too Soft

Works great for intervals and anything below half marathon. Used in the Sydney marathon and had issues. I’m quad dominant. That course is hilly and the roads are canted (sloping side to side), so the soft cushioning resulted in a lot of excess motion and the need to stabilize - this created a lot of additional fatigue. Also, I had the worst pain in the ball of my right foot starting at mile 15 - it felt like I had a rod putting extreme pressure in that spot, and as soon as I took the shoes off the pain went away. Never felt this in any shoes prior to the AP4’s. I’ve since worn the same pair on tempo runs and on the track and did not feel that same pain. Overall, I like the AP4 for shorter distances, just wouldn’t use it again in a marathon.

Very soft sole, feels strange in the beginning, however very bouncy and delivers explosive energy return while running. Very good build quality. Forefoot is a little bit on the narrow end, but overall closer to neutral. It takes a while to get used to, but once done, nice shoes.
