There is a stiff plastic piece on the shoe’s tongue to aid in pulling on the shoe. It is totally unnecessary and very uncomfortable, rubbing o the front of the ankle with each step, or even just sitting. The shoes also were disappointing once I walked around the house in them - they land flat, no “roll” to the shoe, with little support. Quickly knew they had to be returned.
