I bought this set for my high school age son, who is knew to weight lifting. I have been impressed with the quality and user friendly nature of this set. In fact, I also bought a full cross-bar and additional weights, for a complete set.

Misleading
I would assume that a dumbell set advertised as a 40 LB Dumbell set would mean that it comes with enough weight plates to equal 40 LBs per dumbbell. Nope it only comes with 32 lbs in plates plus the weight of the dumbell bar gets you about 35.

Missing Parts + Bad Packaging = Nope.
I ordered the Fitness Gear 40 lb Adjustable Dumbbell Set from Dick’s Sporting Goods, and honestly… the experience was not giving “fitness motivation,” it was giving “chaotic garage sale energy.” Packaging: The set came in its plastic carrying case, which was already cracked and busted. The weights were slipping out even though the case was zip-tied shut (and that zip tie could’ve doubled as a medieval torture device, because wow). The case was just tossed into a cardboard box — no bubble wrap, no padding, nothing. Just vibes. Missing Parts (the real problem): The set should include: Two 14” standard dumbbell handles Four 5 lb plates Four 3 lb plates Four spin-lock retaining collars I received ONE spin-lock collar. One. As in: not enough to use even a single dumbbell. These collars are literally the pieces that keep the weights from flying off. Kind of important. Customer Service: When I contacted support, the options were: Return it to the store and hope the replacement has all its parts. Keep it and take 15% off. Get 10% off, wait for a replacement set to be shipped, and then return the original one. The part that really blew my mind? They said they couldn’t send the missing collars because “they don’t manufacture the product.” As if they — a major retailer — have never heard of the internet or, I don’t know, ordering replacement parts from the same third-party sellers the rest of us use. So I ended up ordering the missing parts myself. If I can do that from my couch, surely Dick’s can too. Bottom Line: The weights themselves are solid and would probably be great… if they arrived intact and complete. But between the packaging, the missing hardware, and the unhelpful customer service, I won’t be purchasing equipment from Dick’s again.

Good Weights, Terrible Case
I bought this set because I don’t have space for a full home gym, and I really only need it for days I can’t make it to my gym. I like the versatility of the set and the fact I can stow it away under the bed. BUT the case does a terrible job of holding the parts in place, so when I go to close it everything falls out. Have not yet figured out a way to store everything, hold it in place, and close and latch the case successfully, which sort of defeats the purpose.

Durable, Flexible, And Elegant!
This is a very durable, flexible, and elegant dumbbell set. You can adjust the weight by adding or subtracting weight plates, which means that one pair of dumbbells allows you to do many different exercises. Yes, it takes a minute to screw the collars on and off to change weights -- but you need to rest a minute between sets anyway. And you can screw the collars on snuggly so that the weight plates don't rattle around like other quick-adjust dumbbell sets (and this set costs far less). Finally, the plastic case is a nice touch if you need to put the weights away when the grand kids come over for a play date.

Fantastic Value!
I don't leave many reviews but this product is worthy of some praise. I was looking for a pair of 10 lb weights to take with me while traveling. While looking at options at my local store, I spotted the Fitness Gear 40 Lb Adjustable Dumbbell Set. There was only one set on the floor, and it was sealed. I bought it without seeing the contents. This turned out to be a pleasant surprise! The components are nicely machined and painted or chromed, the set is versatile for a few weight combinations, and the carry case is a bonus. The collars go on the bars smoothly and easily. There are no sharp edges anywhere. This is a great set of adjustable dumbbell weights.
