Very Disappointed

Purchased a 1040 after my 1030 plus didn't survive a torrential rain storm. It has a nicer user interface than the 1030 but the software is buggy even the most recent beta version. Grade worked well on the 1030 despite some lag but doesn't work at all on the 1040. As many others have stated even on flat ground it can go from -3% to +3 % in just 50 yards or less. Climbpro doesn't reflect the proper beginning or ending of many climbs even on popular trails. Temperature is still not accurate but I always viewed it more as a heat index. If Garmin could get to a stable working firmware it would be a great bike computer.

Complaints

Great but a few complaints. The banner that tells me that the sensor is connected/disconnected every 5 seconds sometimes, blocks the top line in my activity screen so i cant see what i want to see. The 1030 gave these inane warnings too but it was a small line above that did not obscure the info in the activity screen. The timer was changed from 00:00:00 format to 0:00 so after years of looking at the previous format now i have a harder time reading the screen and easily seeing the timer info because the 3 digit format is too similar to other info like heartrate. This requires me to spend an extra second or 1/2 second looking at tbe screen while im riding my bike at high speed and or max effort in a crowded park or traffic. Battery life is great. Text message announcement lingers too long on the screen.

Just What I Needed!

I am a long time Garmin user going back to the Edge 500. My old 520 started acting up (giving false elevation gain readings) Figured it was time to Upgrade. Bought the 840 non solar on sale. Screen was just to small for my aging eyes. Returned it in the 30 day window and took a chance on the 1040 non solar. This is exactly what I was looking for . The larger screen is easy to see at a glance touchscreen is GREAT! Also the larger screen combined with the touchscreen is perfect for navigation. The whole unit is light years ahead of my 520. And even my non solar battery life is amazing.

Very Disappointed

Previously, I owned a 1030 plus that didn't survive a torrential rain storm. The 1030 plus firmware was very solid. The 1040 is very buggy whether you are using the current firmware or the public beta. Climbpro is very inaccurate and starts sometimes even on flat ground. The grade feature no longer works accurately. I have noticed in the forums many others are having the same issues. The interface is easier to navigate than the 1030 plus. The temperature has never been accurate but I view it more like a heat index on the ride. It could be a nice upgrade to the 1030 if they can solidify the firmware.
