Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome communicator, take everywhere size This communicator works great with very fast and reliable message sending and receiving. The device logging settings allow the recording of GPS tracks like a standard GPS unit and the uploading of track points allow others to easily track you on a nice map page where they can also request your current position or send a message if you allow those options. The ability to send unlimited preset messages for no extra cost was the most important feature for me. Because the device is so small, I use an annual plan and take it any time I may be out of cellular coverage. The Earthmate app works perfectly on my iPhone X with good offline mapping.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works in challaging enviornment but confusing I purchased this to use on SAR operations, but my first real life use was a 4 day trip down the Paria in UT & AZ. We were in very narrow canyons much of the time and it worked very well, it was also hot and occasionally wet and it handled all of the conditions well. I found the interface to be, ok but not very intuitive. The link to my iPhone worked well but once again not very intuitive. I have several other Garmin products and was disappointed it does not interconnect with my Alpha and seems to use a totally different approach. Others were able to track our progress via the messages and links we sent. It took me sometime to figure how to do so. WCB

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Device, Documentation and Apps Lacking The device itself is very sophisticated and of high quality. But the user documentation and the apps are lacking. There are 3 apps that appear to pertain to the device, and documentation is spread across the Garmin/Inreach/Delorme website, the apps, and a summary user manual. Yet none of them is complete, and they are not consistent with one another. It has been quite a challenge to figure it all out. The respective functions of the Mini, one's cell phone phone, and one's computer are difficult to master - especially in the areas of syncing the 3 devices, messaging and mapping. A thorough rewrite would be welcome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Working great so far for no grid long trail runs I have used my mini on one all day trail run when we were deep in the mountains. Worked great as my wife could easily see our location. Sending message back and forth was slow but functional. So overall works great and nice piece of mind should something go wrong and we need a SOS option. I wish i could see the overall GPS stregtnh on the display ( like cell bars) as I am sure it changes if I am on a peak or deep valley. The iPhone interface makes messaging a lot easier. For now for someone with young kids and old knees this is cheap insurance considering we are off the grid at least once a month.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to do Before purchasing, I did a lot of online research, so I was well acquainted with the capabilities of the inReach. It's very small, lightweight, and sturdy-feeling. The buttons take a lot of pressure to activate, with a solid click when pressed. I'm afraid it would be downright painful to compose much of a free form message directly on the device. I'm glad that capability is there, but I intend to keep a well-charged phone nearby at all times. It makes it easy to keep in touch with family when I'm out of cell phone reach, and it does this in a tiny, fairly simple to use package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent navigational tool I bought this primarily for emergency communication use when hiking in unfamiliar areas. While trying it out, I ended up on a route that I could not have completed without the navigation tool - it was spot on and literally got me home, very easy to read and follow having had no previous experience with any kind of mapping/gps/navigation tool besides paper maps. I also like that the subscription service has so many options. I'm looking forward to learning everything this little device can do, but it has already paid for itself!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much better than the previous model I had an inReach for the DeLorme PN-60W and, while it was better than nothing, it was bulky and seriously limited by not having any sort of useful keyboard. Also, the restricted list of contacts created difficulties in communicating on the road. I'd give the Mini five stars but I'm still having mixed feelings about the rechargeable battery. Several times I've gone to use the unit and the batteries have been discharged. Apparently it still draws some current even while shut off and this can drain the battery. The old model had a choice of rechargeable or standard batteries. The small size doesn't allow for standard batteries. As a work around, I've purchased an auxiliary USB battery that can substitute for the internal battery and recharge it at the same time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simplicity, and simple design in light weight. I am glad I upgraded to this unit. I previously have used several similar units and moist recently the Delorme InReach Explorer. This little unit is so small it takes up very little real estate on my back. I clip it up high for the best signal. Its ability to work with my garmin watch is a real nice plus. The phone interface is smooth and straight forward and overall I'm impressed with the unit. Ive taken it on a few trips and it doesn't disappoint. I didn't need the unit with onboard mapping as I already had that capability on my watch. I look forward to getting a good life cycle out of it. Last advice is change the message alert to ring continuously. Sometime this unit my be far away at camp and you won't realize you have an unread until you look directly at the unit.
