Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what I got it for. Used it for the first time on my hike without a cell signal and sent the preset message to my contact. Messages were received successfully along with the link to the location (you can turn on/off this option). I dont think I will really need to send messages other than the presets unless I am truly in trouble. Based on that I chose the lowest subscription option. Love the smaller size/weight. Only wish the selections were a bit more intuitive on the device. I think it should just highlight whatever option you want, but instead it is the option that appears in the center of the screen. Hard to explain unless you have used the device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome communicator, take everywhere size This communicator works great with very fast and reliable message sending and receiving. The device logging settings allow the recording of GPS tracks like a standard GPS unit and the uploading of track points allow others to easily track you on a nice map page where they can also request your current position or send a message if you allow those options. The ability to send unlimited preset messages for no extra cost was the most important feature for me. Because the device is so small, I use an annual plan and take it any time I may be out of cellular coverage. The Earthmate app works perfectly on my iPhone X with good offline mapping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A genuine life saving device! I decided several days ago that I would go hike the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine. All was going well up until about 45 miles into it, and I started getting cramps, and fatigue. Then I got hungry and tried to eat and I couldn't keep any food down. Then I started having other unpleasant issues, but long story short I sent an SOS and passed out of exhaustion. When I woke up I was safe no longer in the wilderness, and some how alive... all thanks to the Garmin InReach MINI. I highly reccomend this if you ever do anything risky! You never know when illness can occur, and if it happens at the worst time you will want this device nearby.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works in challaging enviornment but confusing I purchased this to use on SAR operations, but my first real life use was a 4 day trip down the Paria in UT & AZ. We were in very narrow canyons much of the time and it worked very well, it was also hot and occasionally wet and it handled all of the conditions well. I found the interface to be, ok but not very intuitive. The link to my iPhone worked well but once again not very intuitive. I have several other Garmin products and was disappointed it does not interconnect with my Alpha and seems to use a totally different approach. Others were able to track our progress via the messages and links we sent. It took me sometime to figure how to do so. WCB

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Device, Documentation and Apps Lacking The device itself is very sophisticated and of high quality. But the user documentation and the apps are lacking. There are 3 apps that appear to pertain to the device, and documentation is spread across the Garmin/Inreach/Delorme website, the apps, and a summary user manual. Yet none of them is complete, and they are not consistent with one another. It has been quite a challenge to figure it all out. The respective functions of the Mini, one's cell phone phone, and one's computer are difficult to master - especially in the areas of syncing the 3 devices, messaging and mapping. A thorough rewrite would be welcome.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Whew, made it back safely! I bought this, at my wife's urging, just before heading into an area with very few or no people at all! Terrain is rugged and steep and it's a long way out. The Garmin did its job letting me notify my family that all was good! It did give me messages saying that it was having a hard time connecting to satellites, but that only meant it took a couple of minutes to send. The most difficult thing with the mini is trying to type in your own personal message. I think I'll have to read the manual to make it easier. All in all, it provided great security for me and my family. It added that additional level of safety that was needed and performed flawlessly with great battery life!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Working great so far for no grid long trail runs I have used my mini on one all day trail run when we were deep in the mountains. Worked great as my wife could easily see our location. Sending message back and forth was slow but functional. So overall works great and nice piece of mind should something go wrong and we need a SOS option. I wish i could see the overall GPS stregtnh on the display ( like cell bars) as I am sure it changes if I am on a peak or deep valley. The iPhone interface makes messaging a lot easier. For now for someone with young kids and old knees this is cheap insurance considering we are off the grid at least once a month.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to do Before purchasing, I did a lot of online research, so I was well acquainted with the capabilities of the inReach. It's very small, lightweight, and sturdy-feeling. The buttons take a lot of pressure to activate, with a solid click when pressed. I'm afraid it would be downright painful to compose much of a free form message directly on the device. I'm glad that capability is there, but I intend to keep a well-charged phone nearby at all times. It makes it easy to keep in touch with family when I'm out of cell phone reach, and it does this in a tiny, fairly simple to use package.
