Great Cushioning But Rather Narrow Even In The Wide Width

Purchased size 10 Wide (the Bondi 9) in store after trying the regular 10 that felt rather tight. At the store the 10 Wide felt very comfortable. The same comfort I felt also at home - I wore shoes around the house and walked in them for a few hours (albeit on carpeted area). So the real test for me was when I wore them for my first long walk on the bike and hike trail, in late afternoon, on a rather hot day (85 degrees). I regret to report that the shoe width (the D width) is not as wide as I would have hoped. I usually buy regular width shoes (Saucony, Asics, Brooks) and I know to get half-to-a-whole size up from my regular dress shoe size. The Hokas seem to run narrow, even in their wide version (I am speaking of the Bondi) and it's a shame, because they have excellent cushioning and support and it's the reason I gravitated to them. I needed more cushioning and support as my aging feet are losing the padding I used to have when I was younger. The cushioning is important to me because I go for really long walks/hike so I want the shoe to feel comfortable and cushy throughout the hike (we're talking 5-6 miles or more). Well, in my test walk, unfortunately the Bondi 9 Wide width started giving me trouble by mile 3. Though I could tell there was plenty of room at the front of the shoe, my toes started burning, and the mid-foot started feeling tight. I loosened the laces to alleviate the pressure (thinking that it was the laces too tight) but this didn't really help, because then the shoes felt loose on my feet. The only way to make the burning in the toes lessen was to slow down my pace. I finished my 5 mile walk but I wasn't a happy camper knowing that I spent $175 on a pair of top quality shoes that unfortunately aren't working for my very average feet. I am not flat footed, I have an average arch (I used to have higher arch actually in my younger days), and a rather average width foot. To be honest, the cushioning and springiness of the shoe was very good ( I can see why everybody raves about their comfort), but the fact that my average foot felt so constricted in a wide-width shoe was beyond me to understand. So my conclusion is that Hoka Bondi runs narrow in general, including their wide width.

I have bad knees but these shoes make it possible for me to walk on the treadmill without pain. I highly recommend.
