Shoe is definitely a barefoot shoe. I run in Five Fingers a lot, so I am used to barefoot shoes. I was actually looking for something with just a little bit of cushion like my old zero-rise Merrells, and hoping this might be it, but no. This shoe has no cushion. Even though it was not what I was looking for, I'm still giving it five stars, because as a barefoot shoe, it is well made, the sole of the shoe has great traction, and it fits well. True Barefoot Shoes For Multi-surfaces

I needed a shoe for walking my dog from home to a large park with a creek - so something that could handle pavement, concrete, crushed gravel, and walking in sometimes knee-deep water - without getting pebbles stuck between the shoes & my foot (like my Chacos) or being too uncomfortable on man-made surfaces (like my Vibrams). These are pretty good. A few quibbles - no back loop to help get on when wet or to carry on a biner, a bit sloggy when walking in the water, and not the most breathable for wet feet. But those are minor compared to the comfortable & natural feel. I recommend to those already used to barefoot shoes, as you will feel everything you step on. I ordered up a half-size as recommended by others, and the fit is perfect.
