Dick’s Sporting Goods: Now Featuring Pre-worn Merchandise At Brand New Prices

If anyone is looking for the thrill of a mystery box experience, I highly recommend ordering “brand new” shoes from Dick’s Sporting Goods. I placed an order on 8/18 for a pair of $89 New Balance sneakers, and when my package arrived on 8/21, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Dick’s had upgraded me from new merchandise to a pair of shoes that had already lived a full and adventurous life. The presentation alone was unforgettable: instead of the usual crisp shoe box, tissue paper, and care you might expect when buying new footwear, my shoes arrived tossed into a plain cardboard box—no packaging, no protection, no attempt to disguise the fact that they were pre-loved. The laces were already tied, the stitching on the logo was frayed for that “distressed” look, and the soles came pre-loaded with authentic mud and debris. Who knew $89 could buy such a one-of-a-kind unboxing experience? Naturally, I contacted customer service. Their response was refreshingly casual, as if accidentally selling worn shoes at full price is just one of those charming quirks of shopping at Dick’s. I was then informed that the only solution was to take them to a “Going, Going, Gone!” store (a name that, in hindsight, feels like corporate foreshadowing). So, I rearranged my schedule, left work early, and rushed there between shifts—only to be told that Dick’s online orders cannot, in fact, be returned at those locations. Apparently, even Dick’s employees are baffled by Dick’s own return policies. The manager confirmed this with a shrug, leaving me with no shoes, no refund, and a lot of wasted time. Back to customer service I went, and this time the advice was to return the shoes by mail and wait for a refund. A refund for what, exactly? I’m not sure—since what I paid for (new shoes) and what I received (something closer to a yard sale find) don’t quite line up. In conclusion, thank you, Dick’s Sporting Goods, for redefining what “new” means. Not only did I receive used shoes in a plain box, I also received a crash course in confusion, inconvenience, and disappointment. Truly experiential. 👍🏼
