Buyers, Beware: This Lock Does Not Protect Your Bike

Buyers, beware: this lock does not protect your bike. I bought a Nishiki bike from Dick’s for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift, and I bought the Nishiki lock to go alongside it. Shockingly, within days of using the lock, the lock was ripped through, and the bike was stolen — despite being locked exactly as intended in a locked and secured parking garage. A lock that fails this easily is not just disappointing, it’s dangerous. Selling a bike with a lock that offers almost no real protection puts customers’ property at serious risk. Losing a brand-new gift meant for someone special was heartbreaking and completely avoidable with even a basic, sturdy lock. Dick’s needs to urgently improve the quality of the locks they include with bikes — no one should have to experience the frustration and loss I went through. This is unacceptable.

This lock was used for less than two months locking a bike outside on a college campus in Northern California. The lock cylinders rusted so the lock cannot be locked or unlocked. I would not recommend this bike lock if you’re planning to use it outside, it is not designed to be used in weather. It is possible it’s only real use is inside, to lock refrigerator doors shut from your greedy roommate, as long as it’s a climate controlled setting. I do not recommend this lock, save yourself the hassle.
