36 years later, our Old Town Penobscot continues to carry us across bays, along rivers, over lakes, and even navigating narrow waterways for exciting adventures.

I bought my Penobscot in 1987 and have paddled it through out mid-Atlantic, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Arkansas rivers and streams. The material back then was called Royalex, but it sounds similar to the triple layer material Old Town is using now. It as been a very durable boat with a hull design that performs well on small and large rivers. It's time for me to replace my old boat, the hull shell is finally wearing thin after 37 years of frequent use. My hope is to replace it with a new Penobscot 164, if I can find one. Wish me luck!

I purchased this canoe in 2002! It has been a great boat. The boat is comfortable on up to class III whitewater, so lakes, rivers, and streams are no problem. The boat gets a little tippy when the payload exceeds 400 pounds, and there is a definite difference in its handling with this weight. For two average size people this is a great boat to experience white water thrills on the class I-III variety! I will keep it for life!

I bought a 16 ' - 4 " Old Town canoe some 30 years ago and went tripping for quite a few times with it. It endured and resisted being wrapped around a rock and I was able to replace the gunwhales and seats to make it seaworthy again. This is a quite robust canoe! I highly recommend it.

This Canoe has become ingrained in my identity. We have been wilderness tripping in this canoe for the last 15 years. We have paddled her throughout long stretches of the Mississippi and its major tributaries, along the shores of lake Michigan and Superior, in the Salty waters of Washington's Pudget Sound, and countless trips to through the Boundary Waters and Canada's Quetico Provincial Park. This is the little Canoe that Could! She was the perfect choice for the 210 Mile Boarder Route Challenge in 2018. Over the course of this 8 day challenge she experienced several storms with winds of up to 20 miles and hour and waves between 4-5 feet. Because of her stable hull design we never ended up in the drink (which could have been potentially deadly in the conditions we were in). With enough gear for 2 people to last 8 days she wasn't even close to being fully loaded. Because of this we had enough free-board to prevent waves breaking over our rails and swamping our boat. The only complain here is that she is HEAVY. I was reminded of this as we had to portage her a total of 20 miles (including the 9 mile Grand Portage). Her weight is due to her robust build quality; its a trade off that I will easily take. This canoe has slipped off of my shoulders on a few occasions and has trail blazed many Canadian Portages with little more than a scratch. I have since her initial purchased laced her, installed painter attachment points, knee pads, keel guards, a kneeling thwart, flotation bags, and a sailing kit. She is truly a Expedition Canoe and I wouldn't dream of taking another Canoe.
