Stable

The 12' long 120X is really stable and if you point it facing into the wake of jet skis and boats, it handles it pretty well and is reasonably fast....it doesn't pull one way or the other (some of these reviewers have paddle issues, haha). I definitely would not want to go around boat-wake in something shorter or narrower. I agree with other comments about the foot rests. Mine also came all banged up and missing manuals from being dragged around inside DSG by workers in the years it sat there. (It's intimidating to transport, but it's not *really* a big deal, so the 10' models probably outsell it at a place like DSG 50 to 1.) They at least brought me out a scupper plug, which was found to be missing as I left the store. It was also missing some stickers (not the important one) and had some marks (but not scratches) on the bottom. I was able to snag the Neptune version and I found a discontinued Field & Stream (because they rebranded to Quest) car transport kit for cheap. Note that although it's under 50lbs, it is 12 feet long and has no lift/balance handles to get a grip on while loading onto the roof of an SUV, so if doing it myself, I use pool straws or blankets to avoid scratches. All told, I would return it, if I could, and buy it again at $399, but never again at $499 as there is a newer model (Spirit 120X) for what I paid. There is no real value to buying it in-store because the workers seem to abuse them and they're missing bits and don't share or don't have important knowledge. I will fix up the marks on the bottom with stickers or something. Also have ordered Pelican's new canopy (wouldn't pay that much for it relative to other brands on Amazon, but I had ScoreRewards that expire soon), a bilge pump (always a good idea), an emergency paddle to mount up under the deck (500+ feet of water with wake splashing over boat or freak storm cell...good thing to have) and have already added a paddle-bungee cord to it. I use its phone "mount" for a matching-colored BT speaker and wear my phone in a waterproof carrier around my neck (can't see it in direct sun if it's sitting in the built-in mount...will come up with a better solution eventually) along with an emergency whistle (required by NV law) and life jacket (must at least be on board, even if you don't wear it, by NV law). I also added the required AIS sticker from NV DOW to the stern. Will add bright flashing white light that sticks up a few feet from the bow to help visibility to the power boaters and add a mount for a can of airhorn. Maybe will add a plexiglass enclosure to sit in that forward bay with the flimsy plastic hatch so I can mount the light and a motion-tracking camera (it could also serve as a waterproof drone launch/landing pad when not in a National Park).

Nope

Wanted to buy but when I saw the damage to it on the display floor changed my mind.

Big Hole In It After 1 Year.

Kayak was great for 2 summers until it got a hole in it. Pelican won’t honor their warranty so i will never buy from them again

Nice Kayak But Some Flaws

Purchased this kayak for fishing. It is a reasonable weight, easy to care and load on the car. It is roomy for fishing gear and tracks well when paddling. I've used it on 3 fishing trips so far and am happy with how it performed. My only complaint is the soft plastic it is constructed from. I've noticed that the hull already has a few deep scratches caused from when I have launched and landed on the shore line. I'm a bit concerned the plastic is too soft and may not hold up well over time.

Great Value

Great 12’ kayak for the price. I have tried in large lake and ocean with no issues

Just What I Needed

For starters, I'm a 6'2.5" Neanderthal as some call me, 305lbs of mostly bone and muscle, been looking for a kayak that will accommodate me well. This kayak did the trick, it floats, that's a big one, tracks well, very stable, good leg and foot room, good storage area in back with removable hard bag. For the price, you can't go wrong.

Gets Tall Guys On The Water.

Looking to get a recreational kayak. I'm 6'5", 220lbs, with a 36" inseam and wear a size 13 shoe. I looked at reviews for this and the Field and Stream 120 Blade. The Pelican looked like a better build quality. I fit in the Mustang 120x comfortably and it tracked decent enough. The seat is comfortable but an extra cushion would be recommended. I will upgrade to adjustable foot pegs and some aftermarket drybag hatches.

Bought this a few weeks ago and I’m having a lot of fun! Very stable and steers straight and paddles easily.

Good Starter Kayak

I am new to kayaking, so I did lots of research before making my first purchase. Knowing that I wanted to go fishing, camping, and recreational paddling I was looking for a good blend of features and affordability when I decided to buy the Mustang 120, and so far I'm happy that I did. As a sit-in kayak, it is easy to paddle and has good stability. It tracks well for not having a skeg or rudder; some lateral movement but nothing cumbersome. The seat is comfortable with good lumbar support, though I may look into adding a back cushion in order to optimize my positioning relative to the footrests (my most comfortable leg position seems to fall right between two steps of the non-adjustable footrests.) I've been out for up to 2 hours so far without back issues. The front storage compartment is pretty useless. It isn't big enough to fit anything useful, is not watertight, and is not easily accessible on the water without leaning precariously forward in the cockpit. The Exopod is convenient because you can grab it and bring it into the cockpit to get your gear without remaining turned around in your seat while you find things. The Exopod is water resistant but not waterproof, which is important to note because the rear tank well easily collects water when you are paddling at a moderate rate or faster, leaving the Exopod sitting in water. I'd recommend putting anything important in a drybag before putting it in the Exopod. The fishing features are limited to two flush mount rod holders. This works well for me because I'm a light angler. If you are looking to use anything more than 2 rods and a light tacklebox I would suggest a different kayak. I've seen many interesting YouTube videos on modding this and similar kayaks to add gear mounts and anchor trollies, etc, but for the same purchase price, you can find many kayaks that come with features designed specifically for angling. The best feature for my needs is the carrying capacity. I'm a big guy and I wanted something that can hold me and my camping gear for multi-day river trips. I have test packed for camping and have found by putting my gear into two 60L dry bags (one goes into the bow through the cockpit, the second is strapped in the tank well) I am able to fit everything comfortably and come in well under the weight limit. I can't wait to take it out for a long weekend on a water trail. Overall, the Mustang 120 is an affordable and versatile kayak that will get you into the water and explore this hobby.

Perfect Kayak

I bought this for my husband to use and it’s perfect!

Not Made For Rocky Area

I bought my kayak less then a year ago and only took it out 4 times to find a hole punched the plastic in the front and in the back a piece of the plastic scraped off heavily. Fixed it with water jb weld but for this price I shouldn’t have to. Keep in mind I’ve always been gentle with it coming to shore in fears of this!

Good Starter Kayak

Bought this last month and I’ve taken it on the water 5 times awesome handling really stable Kayak that cuts through the water well even in windy days def recommend Thai product to anyone looking to get into the sport

Unbeatable For The Price

Bought this a few weeks ago and everything is awesome. has a few areas to hold fishing gear which I won't use so I can't attest to that aspect of its quality. only issue is a wish there was a better water-tight area

Excellent Kayak

Bought last summer great kayak , a little pony hard to load on roof rack by myself other then that no issue

Great Choice

After renting sit-on kayaks, I decided to purchase one of my own. This unit is everything that I hoped for. It is stable, comfortable, much faster than sit-ons, and tracks true. If you are looking for a good entry kayak that will probably be all you ever need, this is it.
