Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great and excellent reel for the price. My grandpa bought this reel during the 70's. When he gave up fly fishing, he gave me his medalist. To this day it still works like its brand new out of the package. He never told me how much he spent on it, but it's a great reel. My grandpa passed away almost 3 years now, on Valentine's Day, but this reel he gave me is all I have to remember him. I feel like he's always with me, my younger brother, and my dad when we go fishing. And on the plus side it's still in great shape for being over 30 years old. Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Medalist - Fantasic reel! All the reviews here seem to be about the original style Medalists. I have all sizes of original Medalists and use them regularly, models 1494, 1494 1/2, 1495, 1495 1/2, 1496 1/2, 1498. They're all 40 to 60 years old and work perfectly. I love them so much that I have multiple copies of all the reels listed above. As amazing as the original reels are, this review is about the new and completely redsigned Pflueger Medalist. So far I only have the 5/6 size, but I'm so impressed by it that I'll soon have the other two sizes. These new reels are so different than the old ones that the only shared traits are the handle shape, name, and color scheme. The old reels are cast, these are machined. The old reels are screwed together, these are all one piece of aluminum. The old reels have a friction drag mechanism, these are wishbone click and pawl. The old ones can not be palmed, these new ones have a palming rim. The old reels have a somewhat funky four clicks one way, eight clicks the other sound they make, the new ones sound like a Hardy or an original CFO. The old ones normally have slight tolerance differences between the various components that does not effect performance but is noticeable, the new ones have no wobble or rotational variance. These new Medalists are just about the best thing that could ever happen to a Medalist lover. They are absolutely amazing reels. Thank you so much to those involved in this quantum leap forward. That's a hard thing to say when the original reels are so great, but to see such an incredible improvement in quality, function, design and beauty is about as good as it gets. Thank you dearly for making these reels!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well constructed simple reel I look simple click pawl reels and this one seems to be a great example. I only used it on one trip so far and it has held up very well. Caught some wild Rainbows in little creeks up in the Sierras and it was like heaven, facilitated by this reel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dependable fly reel The Pflueger Medalist Fly Reel has been a constant companion on streams in the western states. It's rugged, no nonsense approach to what a fly reel should be has kept it in my travel bag for years. Sure there are tons of reels available, but I'm rough on gear, and this is one that you can depend on. The drag is smooth. Easily cleaned and lubricated. You can't ask for a better reel for the money spent. I still fish with my father's previous models. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Classic Reel I've been using Pflueger Medalist fly reels for over 60 years. They are simple, dependable, and a great deal. Ted Trueblood, a fictional name, but a standby in fly magazines used to talk about these reels as dependable and a great line storage system. In an age of high and over priced equipment you can count on a Medalist, in the size you need, to take care of your fishing needs. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lifetime reel! This was my first fly reel and it is still in use today. I can't number the fish caught on this reel. It has everything necessary for mountain streams, line control, ease of changing lines, and reliable. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
