Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a bad start My wife bought this for me over a year ago now as a gift. I wanted to start fly fishing and this was an inexpensive way to break in to the sport. Fly fishing can be intimidating to someone new. There is a lot of gear out there, and much of it is way over priced. I had some issues when I was first casting with the rod sections coming apart mid cast. You can rectify this by making sure that they are seated properly. You really need to push and turn them harder than you think. As for the reel, it worked well up until I used my waders for the first time. When I got into the water the reel got wet. Not dunked wet, but wet enough that whatever friction device is used to slow the drag became useless. The small switch that adjusts the drag would just flop from side to side. I was not able to increase the drag at all. I thought, as others have commented that I had ruined the reel, so I replaced it with a nicer reel from another big-box store. After the clerk had moved my line and backing over, I noticed that the drag was once again working as it had before. So if you are planning on fishing from the shore, this may work. I have now been fly fishing for over a year and really enjoy it. I am grateful for the Quarrow Fine River as without it, staring at those $100 + rods and expensive reels and countless aisles of small bags with with who knows what, I would have always wondered if the sport was for me. If you are an avid fly fisherman, look elsewhere. If you are wondering if you would enjoy fly fishing and looking for a way to break in, this is the combo for you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dissapointing rod and even worse reel This was my first fly rod ever, which caused me to be very frustrated with fly fishing. The rod sections routinely come loose with normal casting. Eventually you will cast a section or two of your rod into the river. This problem is made worse by the ferruls cracking which makes the sections fit even more loosely. Now onto the critical part of my review. The reel will stop working or fall apart the first time it gets wet. I mean the very first time you get water in this thing it is 100% ruined. I'm begging you. Please buy any other rod and reel combo. I picked up a $10 combo from a flea market that is at least 20 years old, and it is a much more enjoyable set up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value Great starter setup....good price....the flys don't hold up well but for the overall price it'll get you started with a platform to build on

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy something else My wife bought this rod reel combo for me. The first time I used it the reel fell apart after 3 false casts. There is a major design flaw with the reel. It is held together by a thin metal pin that can easily slip out and make the reel fall apart. I ordered a metal reel and new line for the rod and haven't had any problems. Basically your buying a 50$ rod ,a few flies, and a three dollar reel with this combo.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good action, nice reel Wasn't sure what I was doing with this, I went fly fishing with a friend and got the hang of it quickly. The rod worked great, the reel was good after adjusting the drag and the day ended with me landing a brown trout in the Poudre River, CO. Great day.
