no gain without pain
I knew sizing was important, so I bought my Iron Rangers from the store, was sized by an assistant and everything. It was super super tight in the store, in order for the heel to not slip, but the assistant insisted that was normal, and that leather takes some time to break in and will soften over time, so I trusted it would improve over time. Well, over two years later and hundreds of hours of wear, they are still not broken in to the point where I can wear them comfortably. I need to tighten them so the heel doesn't slip, but the tightness of the width brings me almost to tears after 10 mins of walking (that includes thick socks and heel pads too). I was patient and persistent, but that has hurt me in the end since it's too late to refund/exchange. They are beautiful boots otherwise, but don't make the same mistake I did with sizing! The boots should not bring you to tears trying to break in, and if the sizing assistant insists that tightness is needed, ignore them! It's not worth the cost.

These aren’t my usual every day shoe, but have worn them for multiple days in a row and have no complaints. I just need to clean and condition my leather a little more often, but even with my slight neglect these are holding up crazy well, and are perfectly molded to my feet.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great boots, and excellent quality. Can't wait to wear them across the country. I love the rich brown color, and the soles have a nice traction. Stiff at first, but quickly break in and become comfortable!

I got these used, otherwise I would have returned them. They were essentially brand-new. The craftsmanship is great, the leather quality is great, I like that they're made in the US. I have a very high arch and a narrow foot. The tongue of the boot only opens out like an inch- I couldn't get my foot in them due to my arch. I've never seen a tongue like that- it basically is just there for decoration rather than to offer any adjustment. Rather than try to resell, I slit the tongues along the side stitching open about 3 inches to be able to get my foot in them. That worked. However, as I said, I have a very narrow foot, and they felt like they were cutting off my circulation, they were SO tight. I bought my usual shoe size (8) and have never had to deviate from that size. Additionally, the stitching at the bottom of the tongue is RIGHT where my arch is highest. After days of "leather stretching spray" (which I found out is just isopropyl alcohol and water...) and putting them on for as long as I could stand (maybe only 15 minutes at a time) they have now gotten into a somewhat wearable state. I will concede that they DID stretch out along the sides, but I am still fighting with the stitches along the arch. Because that is stitched, I don't know how much that will stretch upwards. I want to love them. Maybe I will grow to love them as I wear them more. But had I known any of this- that I literally had to cut the leather by 3 inches to get my foot in it- I would not have bought them and I would have returned them had I bought them new. I'm going to keep trying because I have them already, and now can't resell them because I cut the leather. I hope my review helps someone else with a high arch like me- be warned! I was able to make it work, but I wish I didn't have to do that.

I purchased a a pair of these 8 years ago and they are still going strong. With proper care over the years they still look as good as new all this time later. They do get some nice patina where the laces cross, and have some character from being worn. They are my go to boots on most days, with my black pair being the other. They are also 8 yrs old and going strong. Love these boots!

Bought these boots for horseback riding, but wear them everywhere! Best boots I’ve ever owned. IF I ever wear them out, I’ll get another pair immediately. Comfortable, true to size, can wear them all day long and then some.

Got these in amber harness wide width, my second of three pair of RW’s and truly my favorite boot ever! The fit is perfect. Wide actually fits like a wide (unlike my moc toes). Not to mention a truly beautiful boot. Wish black was also offered in wide. I am disappointed more styles aren’t, there are many more I’d like to own!

I remember it took some doing to break these boots in but it was well worth it. They fit like a glove and 6 years in, I still wear them all the time. They’re due to be resoled but still have good years left in them. The entry price seems steep, but it’s a bargain for all the miles you’ll get out of them.

I bought my Iron Ranger boots two weeks ago and have been slowly breaking them in. I purchased the D width as the B felt too tight in the tow box. The right boot is now very comfortable but the left boot is very painful. The gusseted tongue press into the front of my foot making walking very uncomfortable. This was something that I did not feel when I walked around the store in the boots. I will give it another week but I'm not sure how long I can last with this pain.

These Iron Rangers in Amber Harness are my first pair of Redwing boots. I love them. I would definitely recommend going into a store and getting sized. They've got sizing down to an art form, and I was fitted with boots that are perfect for my feet. I see many reviews saying to size down, but they aren't taking into account where your foot bends for sizing. This is why it's important to get sized in store. You may need a little extra room at the toes to accommodate where your foot bends. Break in is a little rough, but worth it. I'm used to breaking in leather boots for hiking so I knew what to expect. It's worth the short time of pain for boots that mold to your foot. Plus, breaking in means the leather is tough and will last for a long, long time if well cared for. The quality of these boots can't be emphasized enough. These are very well made and beautifully crafted.
Mom of two but still cool
My best friend gave me these as a gift and I am completely obsessed. They fit great (went up a half size bc I planned to have socks be worn with them and though after a day they aren’t obviously broken in yet they aren’t bothering my feet at all. Only tip, if you want to play With the laces you might need a longer set. I mean that if you want to wrap them around back and be cute with them. they fit, but but barely. Not a problem though. They match pretty much my entire wardrobe (dresses included). The color is beautiful and my giant German shepherd has run over them daily and they still look perfect- though I know that won’t last forever. Anyone would would be lucky to have them. Highly recommend this, heel is perfect height and color is perfect.

I bought these a couple of years ago, and I love them!!!! I ranged between a size 7.5 - 8 and went with the 8 after trying them on in store. It took me a good 6 months to break them in ( only wearing them a couple hours at a time ), but it’s well worth it! They have since become my every day shoe and I’m on my feet all day!!! I would absolutely buy these again!!

Bought these boots two months ago and after wearing them just a few times I noticed that the heels have started to pull away from the sole around the perimeter. As much as I like the Iron Rangers, the heels should not be problematic after only 60 days. I'm a bit disappointed as these boots have such a good reputation for durability. What to do ?

Purchased on 5/3/21 and eyelet fell out 5/27/21. Unimpressed and disgusted for boots at this price point. Not even broken un and they’re falling apart.
