Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Gun I bought this gun as a Christmas present. Very happy with it, but when the gift was opened it did not have a clip with it. I had an upset Teenager and had to travel back to the store for the clip. Yes they gave me a clip for free but all in all wasn't a great experience. Had to deal with upset Christmas gift and deal with Christmas traffic and craziness of shoppers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from for the money this was a rifle that I got on sale (rebate) and I think that for the price it is a good rifle that has the feel of a heavy good. The upset is that the rebate expired:(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional accuracy / Exceptional value. I'd originally set my sights on a vintage .22 semi auto. My first choice was a Winchester Model 63 dating to the early 1950's. Unfortunately, everyone else feels the same way and they've attained cult status, with prices for 98% + examples in the stratosphere. It was then that I made a decision to buy new. After all, this was to be nothing but a tool; a tool for dispatching "squeaks - aka sage rats" over in the Klamath Basin. They're technically a "Belding's Ground Squirrel" and are the scourge of alfalfa and spud farmers, destroying literally millions of dollars worth of crops annually. The ranch that we hunt is organic, so we are the front line in keeping the population at bay since these creatures breed constantly. I'd been using my Remington 581 bolt .22, that I bought new in the early 70's but the guys that I hunt with all shoot semi auto rim fires. You know, fast and furious~ Ruger 10/22's and Smith M&P 15/22's are most commonly used. The 10/22 is small for me, and felt like a kids gun. Out of the box, it's accuracy is mediocre and I didn't want to pour a ton of money into a new gun just to make it shootable. The M&P although accurate didn't impress me either; too many jambs for my liking. Enter the Remington 597 as the finalist. When Dicks put the scoped 597 on sale, and spiced it up with a $75~ rebate, I bought one. The first thing I did was to lubricate all moving parts with Zep 45NC. It's a penetrating lubricant with PTFE and Vydax. Next came a bore scrubbing, followed by a light bore oiling and then to the range. The first thing I noticed at the range was that it show waaay right. However, the scope windage was already cranked nearly to the limit. After going to the limits of adjustment I got it on paper, but it was still grouping at 3 o'clock on the edge of the paper at 50'. Not acceptable. I pulled the scope, reversed the rings, remounted and repeated. Same thing. After 40 rounds something fell apart inside the scope barrel. Done for the day. I pulled the cheesy rings and garbage scope and installed a Weaver full length base, which used the factory drilled and tapped mounting holes. Next came quality rings and a Simmons 3-9x40 MM .22 scope. Back at the range, it took 3 shots to zero the scope. The 1st & 2nd group of ten rounds each, off the bags, were tight and consistent. Group 3 was even tighter. I then fired 30 more rounds into another fresh target and turned the 10 ring into a ragged hole. I've now fired roughly 400 rounds using Federal Auto Match 40 grain ammo with zero jambs. I score the Scope a solid Zero. Absolute garbage. Resign yourself to the fact that you are buying the rifle and not the scope. Pull it and the rings and toss them in the trash where they belong. Remington Service scores a solid Zero; (don't waste your time trying to jump through the hoops trying to get it replaced). Dicks Sporting Goods deserves a Ten for their service after the sale regarding their assistance with the scope. And as for the Remington 597; it exceeds all expectations and earns a Ten! A solid performer at an unbeatable price point. Buy one and never look back!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Now I know why its nickname is the "Jam Master" I bought this as a Christmas present, and unfortunately it has disappointed badly. It has many misfires and upon closer examination, the interior of the barrel is badly formed. After doing a bit more research, I found many complaints about the misfires and poor extraction. Lesson learned, I guess.
