Rated 5 out of 5 by from This helmet saved my life I was admittedly going too fast for the run I was on (Ski Tracks registered 44 mph) and a lady cut in front of me with virtually no time to react. I was able to grab her waist and sort of push her to the side (thankfully avoiding any injury to her - she didn't even fall!) but in doing so I was spun 180 and hit the ground at full speed with the back of my head. Once I came to a stop I did a quick check of my extremities and everything was OK. Afterwards, I was checked for a concussion and results were negative. Short of hitting a tree or a pole, I can't image sustaining a harder hit to the head. The helmet worked perfectly, and didn't even crack. I fully believe that without it I would at best still be in the hospital, and at worse, never able to write this review. I highly recommend this helmet to anyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding!! This helmet fits so nice I forget I even have it on. I suffered a brain injury in the Iraq war so I don't mess around with helmets that don't offer great protection. I just love how light it is but offers great protection. Outstanding helmet thank you for providing such great products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Helmet..Mostly... I'm the type of person that does a ton of research before purchasing something that costs a pretty penny and especially something that is gonna save my brain. I got the matte black and it looks great. I actually got mine from Amazon and it's the 2013 model. This helmet has exceeded all my expectations except for the zipper to access the ear pads. The zipper is not very smooth and seems as if it could break while trying to open or close it. I'm probably never going to use them for music anyway so I don't really mind that. Additionally, the zipper may have been upgraded in the current year's model. I'm not sure. The fit is excellent and very light. When I read that people were saying they could hardly tell they were wearing a helmet I was skeptical, but I have to say that's the truth. So light and comfortable. It feels like I'm wearing my fleece beanie. My head measured 58.5cm so I initially had purchased a Medium. That was a mistake so I returned it. If you're close to the line between M and L go with the Large. The Boa fit made it fit amazingly. The ear pads are very comfy and warm and the vents are great. It pairs perfectly with my Smith Squad goggles. even with the zipper issue, this helmet is an overall outstanding purchase that I am very pleased with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfort, warmth, airy, safe. What more could I want? Just received my Variance, and am beyond pleased! The fit is perfect, build quality is excellent. This is a huge upgrade from my old Giro Nine.9. I haven't had an opportunity to try out the vents wide open, but closed/half closed they are about as good as it gets. Fit adjustment is very good. Lip is nice as it directs the air well. The profile mates with my Bolle NovaII with no issues. VERY happy with this purchase. As another reviewer said: buy this helmet!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good looking, but I have a funny skull shape this is my first ski helmet, and I'm glad I made that purchase now that the kids are getting faster. I love the style, and the vents that can be closed. This makes for a great all-season helmet. The bright red color is not stealth, but it makes it easy for the kids to spot me on the slopes. Only problem I guess is that I have a particular skull shape - pretty long and narrow. I have a hard time finding helmets that fit me really well; and this one puts a little pressure on my forehead. Enough to be noticeable, but still comfortable enough to wear it all day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent helmet, but design flaw in ear pads is frustrating This is a great helmet, and I also purchased the Outdoor Tech Wireless Audio Chips. For some reason, the helmet doesn't have a two way zipper and therefore, to recharge the Audio Chips, I have to FULLY unzip the ear pads in order to get to the USB port. I have "gerry-rigged" this problem and have put the left earphone in the Right Earpad and visa-versa for the Left Earpad. For such company who is so focussed on design, this project team was asleep at the wheel, especially for a $220+ product. Even with this flaw, I would purchase the helmet again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Helmet, highly recommended I'm a ski patroller and have quite the gear collection. The variance helmet I purchased last year has been easily been my all time favorite. Couple it with some smith I/O 7's and you're hard pressed to find a more comfortable and/or higher performing combination. As for the people pointing out in reviews who has the right of way and so on, please know this... It is up to everyone on the slopes to know the skier / snowboarder responsibility codes for conduct. Nowhere in the individuals review stating a lady cut him off did he mention the specifics. Perhaps she was on a different run and cut over, in which case he would've had the right of way.. That is, when traversing runs you must yield to those up-hill from you on the run you are entering. No need to semi-attack people without the facts. Even with the facts, this might not be the place for it. All that said, be safe out there!
