Gators Don't Care.
The backwater does not welcome you. It tolerates you. Mangroves lean over the water like they are listening to a conversation you are not part of. The air is thick. Something unseen moves in the grass to your left and you choose, deliberately, not to investigate. You are in Florida now, not the Florida of airports and theme parks, the other Florida. The one that has been here since before anyone thought to name it. You are after snook. You have always been after snook. The Micro-King lands softly against the mangrove root, which is where it needed to land, which is the only cast that matters. The blade catches what little light filters through the canopy and throws it back in fragments. The skirt breathes in the current like something alive. The snook that takes it has been living under that root since the second Bush administration. She is not impressed by much. She is, briefly, impressed by this. The run is long and low and she takes line with the casual authority of an animal that has never once doubted herself. You follow her with the rod tip and make the small adjustments of a man who knows he is not entirely in charge here. Eventually, an understanding is reached. Micro-King. For the waters that don't care who you are. Only what you're throwing.
