Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great quality but flawed in design and uncomfortable First of all this is a very well made pack but for me its base weight is too heavy and it's designed so that the shoulders bear all of the weight. The laptop compartment is to tight for anything but the slimmest laptops. The fleece lining is nice and the pockets are well thought out. However the waist strap is USELESS. to have it around the waist the pack sits to low (i'm 5'10") and it takes no weight of your shoulders at all. This pack is defiantly not designed to be worn for long periods of time but would be a great school bag or for carrying lap top and documents on planes, trains etc but not good value for money for this purpose. Cant recommend for any outdoor activity.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A Significant Downgrade This bag is much worse than its predecessor, the Surge 2. Initially, I would like to say that the bag is very well-built and seems like it would last a long time. The fleece pockets are nice quality, and the laptop sleeve is soft and protective, which is very important. The bag's largest and crucial flaw is that the shoulder straps are very uncomfortable. At first glance, they seem fine. However, there is stiff mesh "padding" that goes around the strap at the neck area, and it is very abrasive and painful to wear. The whole strap and back of the bag area is stiff, and the straps simply scrap your neck and are not comfortable. I have tried many bags, and this is simply not tolerable. I asked my family members to try the bag as well, and we unanimously decided that the bag isn't comfortable and that the straps are a serious design flaw. I am a college student, and I was sincerely wanting to like the bag. It looks great, and has all of the features that I need. However, it simply is not comfortable. I purchased the bag and kept it for a week. I wanted it to "break in" in hopes that it would be more comfortable with time, but it simply wasn't. I returned the bag to purchase the Surge 2 on a popular bookbag website for nearly $50 less than this bag. The Surge 2 is much nicer for many reason, but mostly because the comfort is far superior to the new bag. As an added bonus (if you have read this far), the older Surge 2 has a place for storing the waist straps, while the new bag has no storage for the straps and the must instead dangle at your hips. Do yourself a favor and purchase the older bag. It's much cheaper, and far more comfortable. You won't regret your decision.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The "lie flat" pocket kills it I am a high school student who is enrolled in mostly AP classes. This means that I am constantly lugging around four binders and multiple textbooks, notebooks, and my laptop. The backpack is great. The pockets hold everything that I need to carry, and so far, it has proved very durable. My one issue is the "lie flat pocket." The zipper is of a lesser quality than the main pocket, and the fact that it runs the entire length of the backpack makes it very difficult to close as has resulted in some awkward situations as I drop everything out of the backpack.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Super uncomfortable I purchased this to use on a trip. It wasn't even that full, and it hurt my back. I was really disappointed because the tag said it was approved by the chiropractors association. My husband and I ended up switching backpacks because this one was so uncomfortable. The zippers were extremely stiff and difficult to open and close. The only reason why I didn't give this a one star is because I liked all the pockets. Still returned it, because I felt like I should have received a better product for how expensive it was.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great everyday pack for work or play. I use this pack for everyday use back and forth to work. It holds my 15" MacBook Pro perfectly. I like that there are several options for holding the pack. The pack and zippers are very durable. The only con would be that with a laptop inserted in the rear sleeve the pack will not stand up without falling forward or back. It would have been nice for the balance to be a bit better to allow the pack to stand up with a laptop in the sleeve. When driving, I use my seatbelt to keep it from flipping forward when braking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I was looking for, and I'm picky!! I'm 5'11", 180lbs with somewhat of an athletic build. I use this pack for travel and every day stuff. It fits my 13" MacBook Pro and a 1" 3 ring binder no problem. The computer pouch is separate from the main pouch, so no room is lost for clothes, my camera bag (I'm a photographer & musician), toiletry bag and shoes. With those 2 compartments used up, there is still PLENTY of room for everything else, there are so many well thought out pockets. Including stuff for people with tablets. And finally, a fluffy lined pouch for my shades. Love this one, because I use them a lot and I don't like scratched lenses. Finally, it's comfortable. I like to pull my packs tight to my back, for better support and also so it won't move around much while going from place to place (especially getting on and off airplanes). And since I wear it tight, a lot of packs pinch at the back of the neck or shoulders because not enough width was given in the straps. This one feels so comfortable. I love this pack. If you are looking for a backpack which Excels at carrying electronics along with clothes or other somewhat bulky items, and bringing along anything else to make your life more comfortable....then I highly suggest investing in this bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy The North Face quality - quality never disappoints! "The bitterness of poor quality lingers far longer than the thrill of a low-price paid." I heard this years ago and I've never forgotten what it means. I purchased a North Face Recon 0ver 15 years ago, and this Surge is the replacement for it. Great comfort, room enough for travel with camera equipment and clothing, heavy-duty enough for backwoods hiking and camping, versatile and stylish enough to commute with everyday. I purchased the black / green color and love getting compliments on the style! North Face equipment stands the test of time and use. My first internal frame pack was a North Face Summit Series and it was worn to the nub backwoods hiking and camping; once you own quality there is no reason to settle for less. I own numerous North Face products (Convertible pants, tent, anorak, etc.) and they all carry the same thread; quality. I will always look for The North Face first for my outdoor needs, and enjoy the fact that I can buy them locally and support local merchants.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect!! It’s a little expensive, but seems to be high quality. Has plenty of space for my sons books and workout gear. He’s a high schooler and loves it. Time will tell if it will last.
