Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gets The Job Done Was looking for a rack on other sites and came across this one at Dicks on sale. I trust the Thule name so I picked it up. Mounting the rack was easy as my SUV already has cross members. Rack is nice and sturdy once mounted. My only slight issue is the strap. The rubber lock covers do not easily allow you to press the lock mechanism. I find myself having to slide the rubber piece off to tighten or loosen the strap then slide it back on. Other than this the rack is great. If I were to change one thing I would look for a rack that folds. Given the height of my SUV Parking Garages and Car Washes are a no go with the rack on. Not the racks fault as it is great, just something to keep an eye on.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for every kayak ! I bought an Old Town Vapor 12XTS kayak and saw what great reviews these racks had gotten and bought a pair....just so anyone who has bought the newer style Old Town kayak, the hull is to wide and deep to fit properly in the racks and causes the kayak to act like a sail and moves around while your driving. I used the term sail because a friend driving behind me described it that way ! I brought it to the Adirondacks via the thruway and had to pull over 4 times to re adjust the kayak and I used ratchet straps along with the ones that came with it,.it holds as long as you don't travel faster than 50mph! with any of the older style kayaks im sure these are wonderful racks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fits the bill I was in need of a second kayak roof carrier at a reasonable price and decided to buy this model. I used it to carry our kayak on a 5 hour camping trip and didn't have any issues. I also followed the recommendations of securing the bow and stern with provided hook and rope. Overall the carrier was solid and performed as expected. Only items I see as possible issues are: 1) The bolts provided to attach to the roof rack seems a little light, maybe 3/8". I would feel a little better if it was 1/2" bolts. 2) The straps that came with the kit barely made it around my kayak which is an Ocean Frenzy. Overall I am satisfied with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to setup and use We have 4 sets of these to carry 4 kayaks on a trailer. We had to purchase longer screws to install only because our crossbars are not also Thule. We took our trailer of kayaks on a 12 hour road trip without anything coming loose or needing readjustments. Easy to install. Easy to load kayaks. Very secure during travel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit, Thule quality product. Ordered on line, picked up in store that afternoon, installed that evening. I have Thule square bars and it fit perfect, no trouble installing myself and I'm a 59 year old female. No problem transporting my Wilderness Tarpon 100. I have owned Thule racks of different types for the past 6 years. Already have the hullavator on one side and needed to carry an additional kayak so these J-bars did the trick.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Damaged My Yukon XL The third time I used my Thule model 815 Kayak Cradle I used it on the highway. I installed it according to the instructions, hand tightening the knobs that hold the J Cradle to the factory cross bars. My kayak is an Old Town Dirigo 120, is is 50 lbs., well below the 75 lb. limit. The kayak traveled well the 30 miles to my river destination, but 5 miles into the return trip the J Cradle slid toward the middle of the crossbar causing it to bend up. The line tied to my bumper was the only reason there was not more damage. I cannot recommend this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not like they use to make This is basically the same carrier I bought 10 years ago except it is made cheaper. The main problem I've encountered is that the foam rubber that the kayak sits on is not covered with fabric to protect the foam. So after the first use the foam started to tear. They should have kept the fabrication the same as 10 years ago. Other than that, works fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thule J-rack I purchased this Thule j-rack online for my kayak recently. Basically, I'm pleased with the rack itself and feel that the price is competitive to other retailers selling the same item. However, my only complaint with it is how it attaches to the luggage rack on my suv. Each j-rack has two pairs of brackets (halves) that sandwich the luggage rack from top and bottom and comes with bolts that go through the brackets. Round plastic knobs with threaded holes inside them are provided to screw onto the studs to pull the brackets together and tighten against the luggage rack. Here's the problem: I think the knobs are meant to be hand-tightened to secure the j-rack to the luggage rack, but hand tightening alone will not sufficiently secure the j-racks, necessitating some tightening with pliers which can cause damage to the knobs with each installation and removal, if the racks are not left on permanently. If the knobs are not tightened with pliers and are only hand tightened, then the wind resistance against the vessel when driving, especially at highway speeds, could cause the j-rack to loosen and the boat to move around, regardless of whether straps are used also. I used pliers to tighten the knobs so my Kayak did not budge, but the knobs are now a bit chewed up by the pliers after one installation even though I had a rag wrapped around them while tightening them (which was difficult). I just didn't feel comfortable with not tightening them with a tool, but perhaps I could have explored using some other kind of tool to prevent damage to the knobs. Unfortunately, I may eventually have to purchase new knobs if these break. My suggestion to the designers at Thule: Maybe create an adjustable "quick release" type bracket similar to the ones for attaching and removing bicycle wheels, push the quick release down to lock in place and lift to release the tension. These should be adjustable to create the proper tension for each luggage rack.
