I bought the rowing machine because I could not get to the gym during the pandemic and I had tried a water rower before, and I liked the sound of splashing water as I row. The price is reasonable and the idea of being able to store it vertically is good. The downside to the water design is that the energy does dissipate quite quickly so that if your stroke rate is low, it is almost like staring from a full stop. The design is attractive, but it has a few annoying features that a little more attention to detail would have solved. First, the major assembly step is to attach the slide rail to the main body. However, the holes do not align when you do this and has to be “persuaded” with a hammer. The seat has two additional rollers, presumably to prevent the seat from falling off during storage. The bottom rollers bind to the slide rail so that the seat does not slide freely. There is nominally an adjustment to move the lower rollers but on mine they were at their maximum extension so the roller could not be made any looser, so I had to remove one of the rollers. The display mount is not square so that the display is slightly tilted to one side. None of these are major issues but indicates a lack of thought in the design and lack of quality control. The Xterra display also has some odd quirks. The numbers are hard to read and much of the display is taken up by an area that displays the progress of the exercise. I generally use the ”Quick Start” mode where display increases with time, but the duration changes during each session. The system counts both the strokes and time correctly, but the strokes per minute (which is the most important parameter) reads almost (but not exactly) twice the real stroke rate. There is a REOVERY button which does nothing. I bought the rower from Dick’s Sporting Goods so that I could return it if necessary without paying freight. When the rower arrived, the funnel was broken. I called Dick’s but got no response. I emailed. No response either. Overall, this does the job, but with a bit of care it could have been better. Not impressed by Dick’s customer service.
