Prepping for baseball season? There are a few essentials you’ll need for practice or play. Consult this Pro Tips baseball checklist for a complete guide to the gear you’ll need this season.
Start off with your baseball bat — whether it be youth, big-barrel or BBCOR. Before selecting your bat, be sure to consult with league guidelines. Players at the NFHS or NCAA level require a BBCOR-certified bat, for example. Players in little league and younger age groups require a Bat Performance Factor of 1.15.

Start with the basics you'll need (and may be required by the league) for your upcoming season, whether you're a beginner or a varsity player!
Check the barrel stamp to ensure you are buying the right bat! USA bats are approved for Little League and Tee Ball. Players cannot use USSSA bats in USA certified leagues, whether it be youth, big-barrel or BBCOR. Before selecting your bat, be sure to consult with league guidelines. Players at the NFHS or NCAA level require a BBCOR-certified bat, for example. Players in little league and younger age groups require a Bat Performance Factor of 1.15.
Many youth gloves are designated as "utility" or "all-purpose," as players younger than the age of 10 likely don't yet have a primary position. No matter what level of skill, every player needs a glove that fits well.
Never purchase a bigger helmet to grow into. Your head does not grow much past age 10. An ill-fitting helmet can lead to injury!
Metal cleats are not allowed in youth leagues! Stick with rubber, turf or TPU cleats.
There are different styles to choose from based on your player's preference! Explore convenient "pull up" styles, full-length fits or old-school knicker styles.
Hydration is key! Squeeze bottles may be best for a dirty dugout vs. a straw.
This gear won't be necessary for every player, depending on their position, or if their league provides these items for shared use.
Double up! Some leagues require chest protection for both practice and games; having more than one option will cut back on laundry.
