It does need to stay upright, because it leaks if you drop it on its side, or at least the one I have suffers from that issue. I got this one because I am worry having the parts that I put my mouth on exposed to the outside environment. I considered the quencher flip straw, but the top of the straw is still exposed when folded down. I also worry about mold gathering in the crevices. This one was a no brainer for me, especially because you can put hot or cold drinks in this one. it's also easy to wash! I definitely recommend this one.

Does a much better job of fitting into a bicycle frame bag than other 2- 3L bladders which have all sorts of extra plastic handles or huge lids or straps or etc. If all you 're trying to do is carry a lot of water, then grab one of these.
