Never got the point of these tops until I tried one. Excellent outdoors no matter the weather. Does two jobs, wicking sweat to keep you more comfortable and on cooler days also acts as a second layer. Must be the way the air is `` trapped '' within the holes in the mesh. But they are great on the turbo too, if like me, yours is in the unheated garage. Put a loose top on until you get warmed up. Once that's off, this mesh top is brilliant. Really recommend them.

This short sleeved base layer is the best one I have ever owned. It is very stretchy and close fitting- almost like a compression vest, which takes a bit of getting used to but once out on the road it is extremely comfortable and very warm. The fishnet structure really works to keep you warm- providing you trap your body heat in the holes by keeping the wind out, so I found it works great even in winter if you wear a windproof or waterproof top. I double up by wearing a gilet under my waterproof top. The sizing is difficult to recommend because on a coat hanger it looks like your little sister ’s vest but is stretches almost double in size. Luckily it does this because with a S/M size I must be at the maximum limit! The other good thing is that the sleeves are long and clinging so arm warmers grip to it really well and don ’ t creep down, as happens with all my other under vests. If you have a bit of a belly I recommend using the L/XL. The model is wearing S/M- well I am 5 ’ 10 ” and 77kg and S/M has me trussed up like the guy from Erasure- ha, at least my wife thinks I look good in it so a win;-)

I always use merino fabric as my base layer since it's' breathable and odor- resistant. This top kept me warm but not overheated in 30 degree weather with a down ski jacket. [ An excellent product with a compromise between the benefits/draw- back of PE and merino fabrics. My main criticism is the extremely high- cut waist that rides all the way up to the belly button. It should be about two inches shorter than it currently is. Fit( Men's Medium): Great in the legs but unusually high waist band. I 'm 5' 9 '', 165lb, 31 '' Waist, Climber's Build. Pros:+ Excellent wicking and drying times+ Warm+ Quality build Cons:- Unusual cut and fit at the waist- While already very soft to the touch, just a tad coarse compared to Icebreakers products.

[ I could go on and on about this whole line from Smartwool. It's their best thing in a very long time and I 've been a fan for years. The material is very soft, has a great but comfortable fit. These bottoms also have a nice wide and sturdy waste band so there is no bunching or other uncomfortable nonsense in that area. These are very warm, so perfect under a shell pant or bib for alpine skiing, but I do n't think I would wear them on a tour.
