They 're flexible and keep my legs protected from scrapes. They also keep my legs warm outside while I walk to the climbing gym in the winter. It is also light enough that when washed i do n't need to put it in the dryer, i just hang it to air dry. The recommended use is hiking and when hiking the elastic waist band would 've been more comfortable with all that moving and bending you will do. Maybe you are starting activities early in the morning when it's cold but will be out as it gets hot and want to remove the legs of your pants to have shorts instead. Or perhaps you are hiking and going up a mountain and know it will get much colder as you proceed, and will want to change from shorts to pants. These are comfy for any such activities. I purchased these pants( dark blue and black, size XL) several months ago and wear them frequently to work as a college professor and/or weekend adventures. They wash well( machine wash, cold water, and tumble dry, low heat). They do n't `` pill '' on the inner thighs, which I experience with most of my other pants. They are great!
