I also ordered a M knowing that the L might not fit. The M fits much more fitted but still baggy as it was designed. I would size down from your normal size, L to M, M to S, etc.

yes, these do run large even for oversized, baggy, cargoes, but once I figured out I needed to go down two sizes I ended up buying a second pair in a different color. The length is not an issue if you use the bungee cord at the hem of the pants to adjust the length to suit the look you are going for. LOVE these!
