All I can say is it is mandatory if you are using the soli stove on your lawn or like I use mine, on a wooden deck. It keeps the stove from burning its mark into the wood or lawn. Our town in NH only allows fires of out size to be cooking fires before 5 pm. We decided to start cooking breakfast over the fire.
