[ Merino is THE stuff for active comfort in the cold. The key is staying dry between rain, snow, and sweat... it's challenging. 100%( 95 and 88 also good) merino helps to achieve this goal. It's warm when you need it to be and water( all types) evaporates quickly to keep you from getting chilled from damp clothing. It's got to be part of a system though, and you have to use that system properly or you will get damp and cold. We just came back from five nights in our tent@ an avg. of 26F at night. After hiking all day in these and then, putting on fresh Smartwool tops and bottoms we were warm all night( we could have stayed in the same set if we had to). Medium weight is probably fine for most applications, but do be sure you 've got the right system for the conditions. In summer and spring it's less critical, but in winter( THE best time IMO)... having the wrong gear can make for a miserable experience... and a dangerous one. Smartwool has the added benefit of being able to go in the dryer at home... not all merino products can. That's my take.

I still wear my classic heavyweight Carhartt tees, but these feel so much nicer on the skin. I worked in the yard for several hours in 80 degree heat and it kept me cool and comfortable. I could have worn it the next day as it did not retain any odor. I was n't certain how the addition of Lyocell to the Wool would affect the breathability of the fabric. I am happy to say it worked just fine! I have not yet washed it but am sure it will live up to the Smartwool standards. Nice to have a v- neck option as not all of us look good in crew neck styles. From a modesty standpoint you do have to be a bit careful when leaning over. I normally wear a medium however based on the review I ordered a small and it fits perfect.

'' I throw pottery on a wheel, do a bit of woodworking, and hike, and these transition beautifully from casual wear to need- moisture- wicking work/play clothes and regulate my squirrelly body temperature amazingly well. Really love the neckline on the Tech Lite II( still gives coverage on the pottery wheel, but far more flattering and comfortable a fit than the higher crew necks on the other tees). Length gives great coverage, also- just right without reveal. I am more often a small than a medium, but was a solid medium here- the usual bit of shrink of wool during washing was just enough to make it a perfect fit. The price is higher than cotton tees, obviously, but they are well made, a treat to wear, and seem to last, so I purchase a couple now and then and replenish as needed. I have the Abisko wool shirt in the long and short sleeve models. When I had a bad fall in Argentina and broke my arm, I had on the long sleeve version. The arm was badly damaged, but the shirt still looks great. I look forward to wearing it when I get my arm out of the cast. Now I can wear only the ones with short sleeves and REALLY wish they came in other colors.

Does n't wick moisture as well as I had hoped but overall keeps me smelling fine after a few days, is comfortable in cold and heat, and looks good( bought black so doesnt show moisture) Downsides are price( all merino shirts are expensive so not that big of a downside) and extra effort to clean( again all wool products).

[ Shirt is mostly as expected, soft and breathable, and odor resistant. I do wish the shirt was a little thicker so it's less see- through( which would hopefully also help with making it more durable)

[ Just reviewed the long sleeve base layer, and like both of these tops. Since it is still winter in Colorado, I have been wearing the short sleeve T- shirt on the 65 degree days we sometimes have. I also like to wear the men's as opposed to the ladies for the looser fit.

[ I love these icebreaker shirts. I own several in different colors, prints, etc. Very breathable and comfortable. No chafing or scratching on my chest. I 've had issues with other Mfg products on this front. With good care I 've found these to last a while( i. e. line dry only).

[ Smartwool Merino lives up to its reputation. I would say top is true to size. Have not washed item yet, so caveat to be aware. Wish sleeves had thumb hold, but otherwise happy.

[ Recently bought this Smartwool zip shirt. I love these shirts because they breathe well, fit well, and are not bulky. They keep in the warmth. I also order one size up because they shrink after several washes in the washer.

[ Love the pattern and softness of this top. It ’s long enough to keep it from riding up over my ski pants. It is more fitted which is good to keep the warmth in and the pattern makes it cute enough to wear casually outside of winter sports.
