This is my 4th Kayak but my 1st tandem. We purchased it so we would not have to bring so many kayaks for the family to enjoy the sport together. First time out I had my eight- year- old son in front of me and my five- year- old son behind me and I paddled from the center of the kayak. I was able to navigate with no problem with only me paddling and turning was a breeze. It tracks very straight and true. Later in the day I moved to the rear of the kayaked with the five- year- old in the middle and the eight- year- old in the very front. Even when my son in the front got tired of paddling, I was able to control the whole boat from the rear with minimal extra effort. I will be taking this on a camping trip by myself as a solo kayak because I have so much extra room for all my camping gear. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice big solo or a good tandem.

I bought one a couple months ago. My wife and I own several different kayaks. The Rambler is the most stable kayak I have ever tried. I can bring just about anything along that I want; A big cooler, big tackle box, anchor., fishing pole. I bring cushions along. Why? So I can put the seat backrest down and take a nap on this kayak! I take toddlers along and they feel very secure on the kayak. One note, I bought a role of Velcro to put on the seat surfaces so the seat does n't slide around. I just bought a second Rambler to bring my novice friends out with me.

FIRST kayak so do not have anything to compare to all I can say is it is very stable can haul your cooler and wife and still seems easy to paddle. It is easy to get in and out of and no problems hauling in pickup.

Our first kayak and it was great very stable very comforable. We were going to buy two singles then decided to buy a tandem which can be a single. Great choice

My husband and I had two single kayaks and decided on a tandem for river trips. We were looking at much more expensive ones thinking$ 1000. was what we would have to spend on one. We just happened to be walking through Dick's Sporting goods and saw this one. It is an excellent buy at$ 450. and the quality rivals our other two Ocean brand kayaks. It is very stable and tracks nicely.

After renting this kayak from the local park multiple times, I finally purchased my own. It tracks really well as either a tandem or single( sitting in the middle seat). Foot wells are permanent but clip on seats are adjustable for the ultimate fit. Feels very sturdy and would take a large amount of effort to flip it. Not a lot of storage( I pack light anyway) but comfort and stability more than make up for that. Great kayak for me, my son, and dog, but at 12ft and under 60lbs., it is very manageable for those solo outings too. All around great kayak and would highly recommend.

It blew my mind how comfortable I felt in the middle going solo in adverse conditions. I 've had it in some large surf and some heavily currented waters. Not only did I never have any issues of any kind, I never felt like I was n't in control. It's not ideal for fishing, but it can be achieved with some patience and attention to detail. Paddle on!

Nice heavy duty kayak, yet light enough to be handled by one person. Trails nicely. Do suggest buying a set of scupper plugs though.

This kayak is super stable for one or two people in high surf and great at tracking on waves. I love this kayak for fishing, surfing or just cruising. It is worth every penny and more!!!!!

This is the same one we used while on vacation in Maui and loved it. Dicks was great to work with and ordering it for me. It came to my home as promised. A very good experience.

[ This is my go to fishing craft for the ocean. it has a lot of rocker which helps the boat in choppy conditions. I have paddle every kayak imaginable and this is one of the fastest. Its stable with tone of comfort like tracks and a super comfy seat. I spend up to 8 hrs on the water when I go out. I also guide trips out of this boat. it has a high weight capacity, unmatched bomb proof drive, super fast, and stable. I do n't stand up on this kayak but I am sure you could on a calm lake. My favorite boat from Old Town

[ I love the new colors! I really appreciate the price drop+ new features( front hatch and through hull mount) I got this to replace an Old Town Predator( 2020) I bought used off someone. The Predator was way too big for my small car and was a bit annoying to transport to the beach. This is a foot shorter and 15lbs lighter which does n't sound like much but it feels way better. I ca n't think of a single thing to complain about!

[ My favorite hobby right now! Great for my catfishing ventures.

[ Awesome kayak. Perfect for saltwater fishing. Very fast and stable.

[ Purchased in 2021 and have enjoyed it every chance I get! Generally fish the Great Lakes, and it handles the rougher water and beach launching in the surf very well. The peddle drive makes several miles trips out on the water pretty easy, not to mention keeping your hands free from the paddle. Large rear and front wells are great for the dog/ kids to come along. I can walk it down a few blocks to the lake with a small cart with ease, so it's not too difficult to move around.

Frequently Asked Questions For Best Family Kayak

When searching for the best family kayak, consider features such as stability, capacity, and ease of paddling. A wider hull design can enhance stability, making it easier for families to enjoy time on the water together. Additionally, look for kayaks that offer ample seating and storage space to accommodate family gear and ensure comfort during longer outings.

For family use, tandem kayaks or larger recreational kayaks are often the best choices. These types typically provide enough space for multiple paddlers and gear, making them ideal for family outings. Inflatable kayaks can also be a great option due to their portability and ease of storage, allowing families to easily transport them to various locations.

Choosing the right size kayak for your family involves considering the number of paddlers and their combined weight. Most family kayaks are designed to accommodate two or more people, so ensure that the kayak you select has a weight capacity that exceeds your family's total weight. Additionally, consider the length and width of the kayak, as these factors can affect stability and maneuverability.

Family kayaks are typically made from materials like polyethylene, PVC, or advanced composites. Polyethylene is durable and resistant to impacts, making it a popular choice for recreational use. Inflatable kayaks often use PVC or other lightweight materials that provide portability and ease of storage, but they may require more care to avoid punctures.

Transporting a family kayak can be done using a roof rack, trailer, or inflatable options that can be deflated for easy storage. Ensure that the kayak is securely fastened to prevent movement during transit. If using a roof rack, consider using straps or tie-downs specifically designed for kayaks to ensure safety and stability while on the road.

Yes, certain kayaks are better suited for specific water conditions. For calm lakes and slow rivers, recreational kayaks are ideal due to their stability and ease of use. Conversely, if you plan to navigate through rougher waters or ocean conditions, look for kayaks designed for those environments, which typically feature a more streamlined design and enhanced durability.
