I called the company and they returned my call quickly and advised that the smell is normal and part of the manufacturing process. I just got my mat this week and I could n't wait to practice on it. The colors are so vibrant and beautiful and the thickness of the mat is very comfortable. I know you are `` supposed '' to wait to `` air it out '' but I could n't. I hopped on and practiced. it felt great. I have been practicing yoga for 9 months and had a beginner mat before and decided to upgrade( I deserved it). The only thing that irks me is that when I practice, it seems like the mat feels a bit slippery. It makes me kinda nervous I will slip. Other than that, just looking at the mat when I come home makes me want to practice.:)
