I work outside, and finding comfortable shorts that are n't too short is definitely tricky. I would suggest sizing down, based on the size chart I needed a 2X, but I tried on the XL in store and they have PLENTY of room. My grandson loves these pants. He wants to wear them every day. My only complaint is the snap button. The first pair it broke off, but Carhart replaced them, no problem. The snap is very difficult to open and close, so it can be hard for a child to do. It was hard for me to unfasten. It's great that there is a waist adjustment inside. It will allow a child to wear them for a long time.
