As a pitcher, your main goal is to lead the charge against the opposing team’s lineup. To do so, you need laser focus, lightning-fast reflexes and a glove that will offer you the added combination of stealth and comfort. We’re breaking down the three fundamental features of a pitcher’s glove so you can make an educated decision before baseball season commences.

Baseball gloves are designed with one of two types of webbings: closed and open. Pitcher’s gloves, however, are created with the closed-web style. This webbing is just what it sounds like – the space between the index finger and the thumb is covered with a large slab of leather. This slab allows pitchers to find their grip on the ball without the batter knowing what type of pitch they’re about to throw.

As soon as the ball leaves a pitcher’s hand they become a fielder. The closed-web style of glove will also be able to handle catching line drives and field bunts.

In terms of comfort, these gloves rate higher than their fellow gloves on the field. They have significantly less padding than other gloves and fit snuggly on the hand. They are made to handle throws back from the catcher with ease and can stop the occasional line drive toward the mound.

When it comes to weight, pitchers’ gloves are very light, which is ideal while delivering a pitch. It’s very important that your glove doesn’t bog you down during your windup.

Youth pitcher’s gloves are designed for players ages 12 and under and will measure between 11.5" to 11.75". If you think a model is a little big, however, you can tighten the strap on the back of the wrist for a more personalized feel.

The same goes for adult pitching gloves, which typically measure 11.5" to 12". Just remember that you can always adjust the glove for a better, more personalized fit.

When you step out onto the mound, remember that comfort and stealth are your two best friends.
