All I can say is it is mandatory if you are using the soli stove on your lawn or like I use mine, on a wooden deck. It keeps the stove from burning its mark into the wood or lawn. A necessity unless you 're using the stove at a camp ground or out in a remote place with no worries about scorched earth when you are done. The Bonfire is a great fire pit but right from the start I wanted a screen to control sparks. I looked at third party screens but was not overly impressed for the price being asked. This screen has some really great features including the lift off center ring and tools that make removing the screen very secure. It's a good value. The only snag was that the screen requires its own fire ring and the original does not fit. When I called I was told that the newly designed ring should have been included in my order. Well people make mistakes but what's important is how those mistakes are addressed. I literally had the correct ring on my doorstep in about 24 hours after my call. I 'm in Virginia and this shipped from Pennsylvania so your experience might vary. The thing is they had shipped the ring within hours of my call. Way to go SOLO!

Our town in NH only allows fires of out size to be cooking fires before 5 pm. We decided to start cooking breakfast over the fire. We use this with a cast iron skillet and griddle to make all sorts of breakfast foods. This fits perfect over our fire pit and works exactly as expected.
