Never got the point of these tops until I tried one. Excellent outdoors no matter the weather. Does two jobs, wicking sweat to keep you more comfortable and on cooler days also acts as a second layer. Must be the way the air is `` trapped '' within the holes in the mesh. But they are great on the turbo too, if like me, yours is in the unheated garage. Put a loose top on until you get warmed up. Once that's off, this mesh top is brilliant. Really recommend them.

This short sleeved base layer is the best one I have ever owned. It is very stretchy and close fitting- almost like a compression vest, which takes a bit of getting used to but once out on the road it is extremely comfortable and very warm. The fishnet structure really works to keep you warm- providing you trap your body heat in the holes by keeping the wind out, so I found it works great even in winter if you wear a windproof or waterproof top. I double up by wearing a gilet under my waterproof top. The sizing is difficult to recommend because on a coat hanger it looks like your little sister ’s vest but is stretches almost double in size. Luckily it does this because with a S/M size I must be at the maximum limit! The other good thing is that the sleeves are long and clinging so arm warmers grip to it really well and don ’ t creep down, as happens with all my other under vests. If you have a bit of a belly I recommend using the L/XL. The model is wearing S/M- well I am 5 ’ 10 ” and 77kg and S/M has me trussed up like the guy from Erasure- ha, at least my wife thinks I look good in it so a win;-)

I always use merino fabric as my base layer since it's' breathable and odor- resistant. This top kept me warm but not overheated in 30 degree weather with a down ski jacket. [ My husband was so embarrassed I kept wearing my previous icebreaker from time to time, even though it become literally threadbare in a couple areas. Was nervous an updated version might not be as good, as often happens when one buys a replacement for something they 've loved so much, but so far this one has the same fit and feel as my beloved first icebreaker shirt. As well, they are usually `` updated '' colors offered and I was glad this one is pretty close to the original. I 'm sure I 'll get as many years wear out of this one as I did my first and recommend it strongly to anybody who likes winter sports or just comfortable shirts to hang out in during cooler seasons.

[ Merino is THE stuff for active comfort in the cold. The key is staying dry between rain, snow, and sweat... it's challenging. 100%( 95 and 88 also good) merino helps to achieve this goal. It's warm when you need it to be and water( all types) evaporates quickly to keep you from getting chilled from damp clothing. It's got to be part of a system though, and you have to use that system properly or you will get damp and cold. We just came back from five nights in our tent@ an avg. of 26F at night. After hiking all day in these and then, putting on fresh Smartwool tops and bottoms we were warm all night( we could have stayed in the same set if we had to). Medium weight is probably fine for most applications, but do be sure you 've got the right system for the conditions. In summer and spring it's less critical, but in winter( THE best time IMO)... having the wrong gear can make for a miserable experience... and a dangerous one. Smartwool has the added benefit of being able to go in the dryer at home... not all merino products can. That's my take.

Loved my first one so much that when it came to finally replace it, it was a no brainer. Kept me comfortable and warm during winter months of New Zealand, Japan, all the way to the summit of Mauna Kea. I 've never had a base layer fit so good right off the shelf. I bought this top a few weeks ago and so far I have worn it only once to ski in the East coast. I can not emphasize how warm and cosy these Halfdays inner layers! I never feel cold on the slopes even when I am not actively skiing. The color is also perfect and goes well with almost anything! I can ’ t wait for more colors to come out! FYI I am usually an XS but I bought the top in S because they ran out of XS for this specific color. I initially thought S would be too small for me( it looked small) but it turned out to be just a little bit bigger than the usual fitted look an XS would have. I think the top is definitely true to size so I would recommend getting your regular size.
