I bought this for a 60ish mile canoe trip some 20 or so of my friends and I do every year. I 've never taken a PFD on this trip in previous years because it's typically low water. But we had gotten a boatload( see what I did there) of rain and the water was raging so I thought I should pick one up in a hurry. This was a rush buy, but it turned out to be far more comfortable than I had imagined. I hardly noticed I was wearing it even after having it on for 10+ hours a day. The pockets make it very convenient to have smaller items readily accessible on my chest. Unfortunately, on day 3 during a moderate rescue, I left the jacket on the river bank and finished the trip without it. And although this would n't be my first choice for white water, I will still buy another one because I liked it so much.

I use this while fishing in my Yak. Comfortable and stows well behind the seat. A bit pricey for what it is but the features justify the cost I guess.

I have n't been in the water with it yet, but it fit well( I ordered a Large, I 'm 5' 10 '' tall and weigh 150 lbs) and felt comfortable. I intend to mostly use it for fishing from a fishing float tube or standing in water fly fishing wearing chest waders and it 'll work great for those purposes. Found the zipper to be a little bit difficult to get started( the padding down at the bottom obstructs the zipper a little bit but it works OK once you get it started. Nice pockets, but as a fisherman I could always use more!). Neither of those issues made me rate it below five stars. I looked around on other sites and this was the best PFD I could find after doing some research.

Good fishing vest ... The rigidity of the 2 front zippered pockets is also a plus, IMO, over the other comparable PFDs because they act as trays to set gear on when making fishing setup

[ I am relatively new to kayaking, so last year I hired a professional instructor for myself and my wife. Meeting up with him again this year on a separate outing, he remarked upon seeing my Stohlquist Fisherman PFD for the first time that it was a wise choice for both safety and mobility. I am greatly enjoying the feeling of safety and the comfort of not being restricted in my movements while kayaking.

1st PFD. The Fisherman has more adjustment straps to get a snug fit and the is more comfortable than the other comparable PFDs I tried on. The rigidity of the 2 front zippered pockets is also a plus, IMO, over the other comparable PFDs because they act as trays to set gear on when making fishing setup adjustemnts. However, some of the other comparable PFDs seem to have more gear storage options/pockets than the Fisherman but comfort and adjustment was more important to me than gear storage volume. Plus, more gear in and on the PDF equals more weight which may not be a good thing in an emergency situation whilst on a lake or river.
Mesh back fishing vests offer enhanced breathability and comfort, especially during warm weather. The mesh material allows for better airflow, helping to keep you cool while you're out on the water. Additionally, these vests are often lightweight, making them easy to wear for extended periods without feeling weighed down.
When choosing a mesh back fishing vest, consider features such as adjustable straps for a customized fit, multiple pockets for storage, and attachment points for gear. Some vests also include hydration systems or built-in flotation devices, which can enhance your fishing experience. It's important to find a vest that balances functionality with comfort.
Mesh back fishing vests are particularly well-suited for warm weather and freshwater fishing environments. However, they may not provide as much insulation or protection in colder conditions or rough waters. For those situations, it might be beneficial to consider a vest with more coverage or insulation.
To choose the right size for a mesh back fishing vest, it's essential to measure your chest and refer to the manufacturer's sizing chart. A proper fit should allow for comfortable movement without being too loose or restrictive. Additionally, look for adjustable straps that can help fine-tune the fit for your body shape.
Yes, mesh back fishing vests can be versatile and used for various outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, or camping. Their lightweight design and storage capabilities make them useful for carrying essential gear during different adventures. Just ensure the vest meets the specific requirements of the activity you plan to engage in.
