I am new to salmon fishing and I wanted a pole that could handle a King Salmon. My son and I both used this combo last week spooled with 14 lb. fluorocarbon and we were both able to land a tackle busting King Salmon using them. One of the kings was well over 20 lbs.( not sure of the exact weight because we only had a 20 lb. scale). Now my daughter wants to go next time, so I will probably be adding another rod and reel combo to our collection.

This is a very nice set. I 'm comparing this to my Or is Clearwater and it's holding up well. The rod is similar in characteristics. It feels a little less sensitive but acceptable. The finish is matte and really nice looking. The price shows in small details. The pieces are not marked for fit and the openings are not sealed. Neither point is really an issue. The cork handle seems a bit soft and maybe a tad lower quality than the orvis. I think this could become an issue over time and extended use. The reel seems fine. Not as smooth as my orvis either but overall very close. Very happy with it. The weak point in my opinion is the line. While I 'm no expert, it does n't feel quite as good. It's definitely functional but does n't have an end loop for easy threading of the leader. That also makes it a bit rough to thread through the rod sometimes. Anyway, of course there's a reason for the price but at that price I recommend this set. On our first outing, my son caught 5(!) Really nice trout vs my 2 on the Orvis. Obviously that's more due to the flies he was using and his skills:-) but it shows that this set works well. All the other bells and whistles are not necessary needed. It may come down to durability in the end.

I bought this combo for Salmon fishing. I hooked up many fishes last year and was able to drag them to shore. Rod has all the power to maneuver the fish easy. The reel equipped with has issues. It had line going under the spool while reeling back and wasted lot of time trying to fix it and the ant reverse broke after using it for two days straight fishing. I replaced the reel with Quantum Optix 4000 this year and landed( beached some) good number of fish. I recommend to just buy the rod alone. Dicks Sporting Goods
When selecting a rod for salmon fishing, consider the type of fishing you'll be doing, whether it's casting or trolling. The rod's length and power are also important; longer rods can help with casting distance, while the power rating should match the size of the salmon you expect to catch. Additionally, the action of the rod affects sensitivity and hook-setting ability, so choose one that aligns with your fishing style.
Salmon fishing rods are typically made from materials like graphite, fiberglass, or composite blends. Graphite rods are lightweight and sensitive, making them ideal for detecting bites, while fiberglass rods offer durability and flexibility. Composite rods combine the benefits of both materials, providing a balance of sensitivity and strength.
Spinning rods are generally easier to use for beginners and are great for lighter lures and baits, while casting rods are often preferred by more experienced anglers for their ability to handle heavier tackle and longer casts. The choice between the two depends on your fishing technique and personal preference, as each type offers distinct advantages in different fishing scenarios.
Rod length can significantly impact your salmon fishing experience. Longer rods, typically ranging from 8 to 10 feet, are beneficial for casting distance and controlling line during fights. However, shorter rods can offer better maneuverability and are often easier to handle in tight spaces, so the best length depends on your fishing environment and technique.
The action of a rod refers to how much it bends when pressure is applied. For salmon fishing, a medium to medium-heavy action rod is often recommended, as it provides a good balance of sensitivity for detecting bites and enough backbone for fighting larger fish. Fast action rods offer quick responsiveness, while slower action rods can provide more flex, which may be beneficial in certain fishing conditions.
