More importantly it saves the scooter from falling over! It has a rear brake pad so just step back and place your foot over the brake over the rear tire. I 'm not sure if the battery compartment could 've been placed elsewhere as it's easy to get it banged/scratched up when lifting up the front wheel to get onto a sidewalk for example.
