It is reinforced on the edges, wider than any other straw hat, and the entire underside of the brim is reinforced. However, you 'll have to break it in. It is a tight fit at first.

Second, my kids are able to get great sun coverage with comfort. In the past most of the hats they wore had brims in the back too. Bought this hat for sun protection while some facial scars are healing. I 'm not a hat wearer, but if you have to wear a hat, this is the one! Love that there is wire in the brim so I can shape the hat how I want to and it stays where I want it. [ I love hats and after losing my Columbia wide- brim hat in Zurich( I blame the chocolate) back in 2023, I was relieved to see a replacement a couple weeks ago. [ I was in the market for a serious summer sun hat instead of the cheap ones available at all of the big box stores. After much research I decided on Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat. I received it and I 'm lovin' it! The first thing I noticed was the air I could feel circulating on the top of my bald head. Having vents on your hat are important, however, they usually allow burning sun rays to filter through. Usually I have to decide between being sunburned without a hat or hot with a hat. The Ultra Adventure hat has happily made that decision for me with its ultraviolet protection factor of 50+, including the mesh panels. No more polka dot sunburned head! Also, its so light weight you can forget you have it on. It is really the lightest hat I have owned. Its hard to believe it can do its job and be so light on your head. The downward sloping 3 ¼ ” brim shades my entire face and the cape keeps the sun off my neck, which is another great design feature. This hat gives protection to head, face, neck and ears without being obtrusive. Other features include a sunglass lock that holds your glasses in place. It works too. I have tried to shake my head to dislodge them and they stay put. Also, if taking a hat in a back pack is an issue for you, this hat folds in half at the brim and can be kept in your pocket. Without a doubt, this is the best hat on the market and worth every penny. I urge people to give this hat a try if you are shopping for the best hat out there. I know it's not water proof( the one feature it does n't have)- I hope the water resistance is good enough for summer squalls. I wear it in my urban neighborhood as well as the lake. I also love the extra- wide brim, which easily keeps my entire head and neck in the shade during the brightest hours of the day. Large hats can act like a sail in windy conditions, but the adjustable chin and crown straps are super helpful to comfortably keep this hat on. I use this hat whenever I have to go outside for more than 5 minutes. The brim is extra wide and extra long in how it wraps around your head. I have a degenerative eye disease and am also quite photophobic so this hat is a godsend. This is actually Sun Tripper Hat number 5 for me over several years. I just like the way it looks and feels. Different colors for different purposes.

These are the only hats I wear. They are comfortable, look good, and the hat bill never gets out or shape, even when folded for storage.
