It's not as soft as fine merino or alpacca or rabbit fur, but it's far from a scratchy old blanket or shirt. I 'd say it's closest to these soft, cable- knit cotton blankets my grandparents have. I found no irritation with it against my skin.+ It's warm! I first wore it over a t shirt and under my Greenland No. 1 Special Edition( just G- 1000, no insulation) on a brisk 15°F day.
