The padding is great for this chest protector. It is the same as the intermediate padding in my opinion. They did n't make it thinner because it was for ages 7- 9. If your kid is going to block with his chest starting a young age it is the way to go. I have an 7 year old turning 8 year old and it is just about right. It is a little big but what can you do it is a range. He is not small or huge but it works. Just need to break it in to have it not float on his shoulders. Do to growing/expanding in the chest area I kept having to buy her a new chest plate forms every 2 months( which can get costly) so we decided to give this a try instead. [ I play baseball in a men's league and I 'm the designated catcher. I 've used several types of chest projectors before but this was my first time trying the Rawlings brand. From someone who wears lots of sporting equipment, I am very happy with this Rawlings Velo chest protector. This particular version is available in two sizes- intermediate and adult. I 'm 5'11 '' and 200lbs and tried the adult size. It fit very nicely around my stomach, chest, arms, shoulders and back. There are two adjustable straps that hook from the lower back to the lower stomach area. The back is also adjustable to fit snug over the upper back and shoulder area. As for the padding, it is placed in the right locations, in my opinion. There is extra thick padding protecting the upper chest down to the stomach, with lighter padding on the sides and upper shoulder area. Being right handed, there is also an adjustable velcro shoulder pad for my throwing arm. I 've taken a few foul balls off my chest and I can confirm that it does its job. Despite the tough padding, the chest protector is very lightweight. It does n't affect my stance or throw in any way. The inside material is also mesh and breathable, which helps keep me cool and dry. I am very pleased with this Rawlings Velo chest protector. It's designed very well, made with quality material, fits nicely, and offers great protection. Rawlings is a very reputable baseball brand and equipment like this shows why.

Over the last two weeks, he has taken hits directly to areas that are protected in the shirt. He took a soccer ball to the chest that would have put him on the ground. After the impact he was able to keep on playing through without a hitch. He also collided with a goalie who had his knee up. The collision hit him right underneath the chest or sternum. This could have caused a major injury. Again, he was barely affected by the impact. Thank you for making this product. I think you need to market it more agressively to youth soccer which is quite physical at the elite level. My son is a striker and take a fair amount of punishment. We were growing quite concerned about him until we got this product. This product is worth every penny and I will buy it again.
