I was dropping 8 and 10 ounce verticle jigs down to 150 feet and the rod performed excellently. Strong backbone, yet sensitive enough to feel the bite. No need to spend hundreds of$ for a jigging rod. I caught several large Amberjacks with this rod and it did a great job controlling the fight. I like it so much I bought the Penn SSV 6500 6' 6 '' spinning/jigging rod and reel combo I have n't used it yet but I know it will perform as well as the more expensive jigging set up's.

Bought the mag heavy because it fell in a sweet spot with the 1 1/2 oz max lure weight. It feels right with that, at least, but all I 've done is handle it so far yet to fish it. However I had fished a fury for years and this is comparable, minus the cork handle which was n't great on the fury anyway. I looked at a lot of sizes of this rod. I like the guides, at least on the casting rod, and the rod is balanced and light. Has good specs for it's class as far as I 'm concerned and I buy a lot of rods in this price range. I was surprised the tip had the type of flex it did, it feels right. I had n't heard much called mag heavy, but I 'm mostly a medium to medium heavy fisherman so I ca n't compare except to salt.

I bought this rod and reel combo about two weeks ago, as an upgrade to my PENN Fierce IV Surf Combos for my shark surf fishing setup. Caught 3 big bat rays and a 5 ft long leopard shark on the combo with ease. Reel is insanely powerful, and by far one of the best reels you can get out there in the “ middle to expensive ” price range for PENN spinning reels.
