Just got back from a few days hiking around Mammoth Mountain and I have to say the Katadyn BeFree AC 1. 0L was one of the best pieces of gear I brought. I used it at Fern Lake, Superior Lake, Holcomb Lake, NoName Lake, and down by Rainbow Falls. Some of those high- Sierra lakes can have that classic alpine “ lake taste ” — a little earthy, sometimes a hint of mineral or algae. The activated charcoal stage completely wiped it out. Every single time the water came out tasting clean and neutral, like it came from a fridge. No weird aftertaste, no weird smell. Just pure, cold water. That alone made the whole trip better. The soft flask is super easy to fill — just dunk the wide mouth in a lake or stream, screw the filter back on, and start drinking. Flow is excellent. I never felt like I was fighting it. A couple of firm squeezes and you ’ re getting water right away. When I was moving between lakes it was nice not having to stop for long. Fill, drink, keep hiking. It ’s ridiculously light and packs down small when empty, which I appreciated on the longer stretches. The flip cap kept everything clean and didn ’ t leak in my pack. Cleaning was simple too — just a quick shake/swish in some water and it was good to go again. I ’ ve used other filters before that left a slight plastic or chemical taste, or slowed down after a few days. This one stayed consistent the whole trip and the charcoal did exactly what it was supposed to do. If you ’ re heading into the Sierra( or anywhere with natural water sources), this little bottle is worth every ounce. Highly recommend.

[ This bottle is excellent. Fill the bottle, put a filter puck in the screw on cap, and drink; it does not get any simpler. I went on a few multiday trips with this bottle in stow, and I have yet to find a bottle more packable. A few inches is all you need as far as space goes. Basically, it take about as much space as a tennis ball and it's very lightweight. I was worried that it might be a little tough to clean, but that's not the case. I have narrow bottle brushes to scrub if need be, but honestly fill it with soap and water when you get home, shake it out, and hang it upside down.

5 Trevor F
[ I ’ ve used it to filter well water in the desert, trail runs in the mountains, and fly fishing in the creek. It ’s compact enough for easy storage but has enough volume so that you could use it as your only bottle. The flow is decent and the cap is secure even knocking around rocks. This little thing just works. I haven ’ t had to clean it yet but the directions seem very simple. Highly recommend for any trip where you need to filter water!

[ This was a great addition to my field work pack for a recent river survey. It is lightweight water bottle option, with the added bonus of the water filter to make sure the water was clean prior to drinking.

[ I have tried just about every ultralight water filtration system on the market and been repeatedly impressed by the BeFree's flow rate. The BeFree AC seems even faster than the original model, filling up my one- liter water bottle within seconds. After receiving this system in the mail, I tested it on multiple dayhikes and trail runs. It held up well, and the collapsible bottle made it exceedingly easy to pack. I usually stuffed it into the mesh front pocket of my backpack so I would have easy access to it when I came across a stream. I filtered probably a few dozen liters and saw no decline in the flow rate. The bottle's large mouth opening makes filling up a breeze. Throw on the filter cartridge and cap and you can drink straight from the bottle or filter water into another container. Simply put, this filtration system is very quick and easy to use. Because I saw no decline in flow rate, I had no reason to clean the filter cartridge in the field, but I know that this is also easy. All you have to do is fill the bottle with clean water, put on the filter cartridge and cap, and shake. I know from using the original BeFree that this method works to restore the flow when gunk from water sources clogs up the filter on long backpacking trips. This method is much easier than filters that require backflushing. The BeFree AC is also slightly sleeker than the original version, which makes it easier to keep the filter in your pocket during the winter so it does n't freeze. I have several long backpacking trips and mountain climbs scheduled this year, and I will be taking the BeFree AC as my primary water filtration system. Katadyn Group gave me this free product to try.

Great filter. I still have the one which was purchased with my Miniworks, but I decided I wanted to have a spare on hand in case that one broke or became too worn to be used. No complaints on them.

I have had a WaterWorks filter for years. The only time I had to replace the filter was because I dropped it on cement while cleaning it. I do try to filter the cleanest water I can find and, when it is cloudy( full of St. Helen's ash for instance) I collect it in a bucket and let it settle before filtering if possible.

I 've never had a slight question about these filters effectiveness. I depend on them to keep me safe on the trail and happy when I return home.

1. Thank You for continuing to offer the ceramic filter for the water purifier. 2. I have used your water filter and your little backpacking stove for many, many ears. Outstanding equipment!

I have a circa 1992 Waterworks filter that I used long ago and put back into storage. After contacting MSR to see if I could use this cartridge in my old filter,( they responded with an email confirmation), I purchased this. Took it on a recent 5- day trip to Norther Wisconsin. Initially in a tannin- filled lake, it pumped quickly. Then it plugged up after 1. 5 liters( hard pumping, trickle). I took out the cleaning pad, cleaned and got it working again at full- rate. It regularly plugged but I was warned that this would occur in this type of water. As we paddled to other lakes, I found that the performance improved( could pump 4+ liters of water with no cleaning necessary). There was one other filter in the group and people were impressed with this filter's performance and field maintainability. The filter then would not draw water in on the suction stroke. I took it apart, and found that there was grit in the umbrella valve. Cleaned it and put the pump back together and it worked flawlessly again. I 'm highly impressed with the overall performance. I like the internal carbon matrix that can also filter out bad taste.

I have a collection of water filters including the older model MSR hyperflow filter and the new 3 ounce Sawyer, but this one ca n't help but make you smile when used. The Sawyer is a pain to fill the dirty water bag, used a Platypus bag with only slightly better results. The older Hyperflow filter is a pain to backflush and gets hard to pump, replaced the filter but the new one is even harder to pump. This new high- dollar filter leaked water out the handle- side of the pump when new, took it apart and spread the lube around better and it sealed up fine. Used it on a overnight pack and was very very happy with how little effort the pump takes and how fast it fills a bottle. It is a little bigger than the hyperflow but sooo much better. The inlet filter looks overkill and will be hard to use in a small water seep but I am sure it will work out. Overall it is so fast and easy to use it is well worth the price.

Purifying some ice cold water in the Weminuche Wilderness! Performs flawlessly! Reminds me of camping as a child pumping water from the pump in the ground! So easy to use it's a breeze. I recommend this product A++

5 JohnnyTN
I could say it's the most advanced, easy to use portable purifier on the market, but that's old news. Yes, it is bulky and heavy for backpacking compared to filtering- only options, but it purifies(!), and freezing will not render it unusable. It is also perfect for international travel, mission trips, and home emergency kits.

5 Dean
[ I bought this for my daughter who is now in Nicaragua. With widespread contamination of wild water( lakes, rivers etc) with human feces and even tap water uncertain, I wanted the anti virus feature. I have used Sweetwater, and other brands for bacteria and cysts but the no chemical virus elimination is promising. Since I have not tested this in a clinical lab setting I ca n't promise you there are no viruses. I will say the thing pumps water like no tomorrow and the design seems sturdy and simple. While most people are using bottled water and even Coke when the local retail does n't do bottled water, my daughter is free as bird to pump her own. I will say that I have some other brand bottles besides Nalgene and they do n't work with the clean side threads on the Guardian. So you must carry at least one Nalgene standard widemouth with you.

5 TYHAC
[ Used for a weeklong backpacking trip, end to end on IR. Worked flawlessly in standing inland lakes, flowing and shallow trickling streams. Auto backwash is excellent. Packs well. Not sure how it can be improved!

extremely high quality and heavy duty. functions very nicely. nice flow rate. comes with a travel pouch, some in/out hoses, a sinker/sediment filter for the in hose, a filter- life gauge, and a scrub pad to clean the filter. the main assembly is a very premium device. very happy with my purchase. will be used as an emergency filter and a long term backpacking/survival filter. hoping for a long life for this device!

I have used this filter for the past 18 years both OCONUS and CONUS. This is by far the best, most reliable portable manual water filter there is. I have filtered from numerous sources of water in Asia/Southeast Asia and from everything in the backcountry in the America's to include cattle tanks and have not had any waterbourne illnesses while using this filter. Katadyn is the gold standard when it comes to all forms of water treatment and at this price, you can not beat it anywhere else. A little research on water treatment will help you with knowing its capabilities, its maintenance requirements and preventing cross contamination but other than that, do n't hesitate.

[ The Katadyn filter is so easy to care for and has no odd tastes or after effects. We love it

5 Joseph F
[ I recently had the opportunity to test the BeFree AC 0. 5L Microfilter Bottle on several hikes in the Rocky Mountains, ranging from quick trail runs to full- day excursions in remote areas. The BeFree system is intuitive. I was able to fill the bottle from streams and lakes without any hassle. The wide mouth makes scooping water fast, and the filter screws on easily. I didn ’ t need to read any instructions to get going — just fill, squeeze, and drink. It ’s perfect for anyone who wants a grab- and- go filtration system. The bottle itself feels a little lighter and thinner than traditional hard- sided bottles, but it held up well during my trips. I dropped it a couple of times on rocky ground, and it didn ’ t puncture or split. The filter remained intact and operational. While I wouldn ’ t want to step on it or pack it at the bottom of a loaded bag, for typical hiking use it ’s more than durable enough. The flow rate is impressive for a filter of this size. Unlike some filters where you have to work hard to get a drink, the BeFree allows a smooth, fast flow with just a gentle squeeze. I never felt like I had to wait to quench my thirst — even after several days of use. Cleaning was super simple. I just shook the bottle with clean water or swirled it a few times to dislodge any debris. For longer trips, I ’ d still want to do a deeper clean periodically, but for short- term use it couldn ’ t be easier. What I Liked: Lightweight and ultra- packable Great flow rate No backflushing tools or complex cleaning steps Convenient size for day hikes or trail runs Room for Improvement: A slightly more rugged bottle material would boost confidence when using in rough terrain An easier to open cap would be appreciated. My hope is it gets easier with time. Who I ’ d Recommend This To: Trail runners and fast- packers Day hikers Ultralight backpackers Anyone who wants a simple, compact backup water filter for emergency kits or travel

[ Took this little guy to the desert for my mountain biking trip. Stopped at a reservoir for a dip& to hydrate, and this bottle is PERFECT. It folds up small and the carbon filter makes the water taste well, tasteless. Can ’ t wait to take this out while I ’ m working in the backcountry and need a quick water break. It ’ ll be perfect for bikepacking this summer too. It filters pretty quickly if you suck on it like a sports bottle, but it still filters quickly if you ’ re dripping/squeezing it. I ’ m interested in snagging the 1L bottle for hot days on the trail. It ’s way quicker and easier than using a pump filter or waiting on a big gravity filter, but it pairs perfectly with those. Disclosure- Katadyn Group gave me this free product to try.

5 Mohammad E
[ Because it ’s performance very well, it ’s easily portable, and I had no issues with it.

5 Jayson W
[ Katadyn Group gave me this free product to try. Out in the wild filtering rain water tonight. It ’s. 5l so not the biggest size but fits great in my day pack and weighs next to nothing. If you are in need of a small filter and rez package this is the ticket. Makes the water nice and clean. No gi upset so far so I ’ d say it ’s working. I ’ ve dropped it on rocks and sticks and no punctures had it in my pack full of water and it never burst so pretty tough little bladder. The water taste pretty fresh with minimal aftertaste I ’ ve been using it in streams and with rain water so far and give it two thumbs up. The flow is what you would expect slow but gets the job done. All in all the perfect little space saving bladder with filter. Folds up nice and small. Get one and store it in your pack or car or boat or what ever you won ’ t regret it when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions For Wilderness Water Filter

A wilderness water filter is a portable device designed to remove contaminants from natural water sources, making it safe for drinking. These filters typically use various methods, such as mechanical filtration, UV light, or chemical treatments, to eliminate bacteria, protozoa, and sediment. Users can fill the filter with water from streams, lakes, or rivers, and the device processes the water, providing clean drinking water for outdoor activities. Wilderness water filters are essential for camping, hiking, and other outdoor adventures where access to clean water may be limited.

When selecting a wilderness water filter, consider the filtration method, which can include mechanical, chemical, or UV technologies. Look for the filter's capacity to remove bacteria, protozoa, and sediment, as well as its flow rate, which affects how quickly you can access clean water. Portability and ease of use are also important, especially for outdoor activities, so choose a lightweight design that fits your needs. Additionally, check the filter's lifespan and maintenance requirements to ensure it meets your adventure duration.

When choosing a wilderness water filter, consider the type of activities you will be doing, such as hiking, camping, or backpacking. Evaluate the filter's capacity, flow rate, and the types of contaminants it can remove, as this will impact its effectiveness in different environments. Additionally, think about the weight and portability of the filter, especially if you plan to carry it over long distances. Lastly, consider ease of use and maintenance, as some filters may require more frequent cleaning or replacement parts.

Wilderness water filters are designed to remove a variety of contaminants commonly found in natural water sources. These can include bacteria, protozoa, and sediment, which may affect water clarity and safety. Some filters also target viruses and chemical pollutants, depending on their filtration technology. Using a wilderness water filter can help ensure that the water you consume while outdoors is cleaner and safer.

Wilderness water filters are designed for a variety of outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and backpacking. They effectively remove contaminants from natural water sources, making them suitable for use in remote areas where clean water may not be readily available. However, it's important to choose a filter that matches the specific conditions and requirements of your activity, as some filters may be better suited for certain environments or water sources than others. Always consider factors such as the type of water you will encounter and the filter's capacity when selecting a wilderness water filter.

To determine the flow rate of a wilderness water filter, you can check the manufacturer's specifications, which typically provide this information in liters per minute or gallons per hour. Additionally, you can conduct a simple test by timing how long it takes to filter a known volume of water, such as a liter, and then calculate the flow rate based on that time. Keep in mind that factors like water temperature, turbidity, and filter condition can affect the actual flow rate during use.

Wilderness water filters are typically made from a variety of materials designed for durability and effectiveness. Common materials include high-quality plastics for the housing, ceramic or carbon for filtration elements, and stainless steel for components that require strength and resistance to corrosion. These materials work together to ensure that the filters can withstand outdoor conditions while providing reliable water purification.

To maintain and store a wilderness water filter for longevity, it is important to clean it regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions. After use, ensure that the filter is thoroughly dried to prevent mold and bacteria growth. Store the filter in a cool, dry place, ideally in a protective case to avoid damage. Additionally, check the filter periodically for any signs of wear or clogging, and replace it as needed to ensure optimal performance.

Gravity filters and pump filters serve different purposes in wilderness water filtration. Gravity filters rely on the force of gravity to pull water through a filter, making them easy to use and ideal for filtering larger quantities of water without much effort. In contrast, pump filters require manual effort to push water through the filter, allowing for more control over the filtration process and the ability to filter water from various sources. Each type has its advantages depending on the user's needs and the specific outdoor conditions.

Wilderness water filters can be a valuable addition to emergency preparedness kits at home. They are designed to effectively remove contaminants from water sources, making them suitable for situations where access to clean water is compromised. Many filters are compact and portable, allowing for easy storage and quick deployment when needed. Having a reliable water filtration system can help ensure access to safe drinking water during emergencies.
