It is reinforced on the edges, wider than any other straw hat, and the entire underside of the brim is reinforced. However, you 'll have to break it in. It is a tight fit at first.

I purchased this hat about a month ago, and I wear it everywhere every day. It's a light weight hat, but keeps my head extremely warm but not to a point where I need to take it off. I can wear it indoors without my head sweating due to the amazing Merino Wool, or outside in the harsh Minnesota deep freeze we are experiencing and my head remains a perfect temperature. I bought this beanie in various colors because unlike my wool hat, it is washable( washing machine) and foldable. It saves me$ from buying wool cleaners. [ I was in the market for a serious summer sun hat instead of the cheap ones available at all of the big box stores. After much research I decided on Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat. I received it and I 'm lovin' it! The first thing I noticed was the air I could feel circulating on the top of my bald head. Having vents on your hat are important, however, they usually allow burning sun rays to filter through. Usually I have to decide between being sunburned without a hat or hot with a hat. The Ultra Adventure hat has happily made that decision for me with its ultraviolet protection factor of 50+, including the mesh panels. No more polka dot sunburned head! Also, its so light weight you can forget you have it on. It is really the lightest hat I have owned. Its hard to believe it can do its job and be so light on your head. The downward sloping 3 ¼ ” brim shades my entire face and the cape keeps the sun off my neck, which is another great design feature. This hat gives protection to head, face, neck and ears without being obtrusive. Other features include a sunglass lock that holds your glasses in place. It works too. I have tried to shake my head to dislodge them and they stay put. Also, if taking a hat in a back pack is an issue for you, this hat folds in half at the brim and can be kept in your pocket. Without a doubt, this is the best hat on the market and worth every penny. I urge people to give this hat a try if you are shopping for the best hat out there. My kids and I love our hats for a couple of reasons. First, they are so light that we do n't feel like we are even wearing a hat that gives great sun coverage, but we are! Second, my kids are able to get great sun coverage with comfort. In the past most of the hats they wore had brims in the back too. I have a degenerative eye disease and am also quite photophobic so this hat is a godsend. I 've wound up wearing it a lot and I 'm buying a second one now. I wash mine often and it air drys quickly. After months of wear it still looks as good as it did when I first purchased it.
