I got one of these jigs last week and went fishing with it the same day. I got my first striper and then 9 more. I kept the two largest ones 21& 22 ”. The best part is the jig looks ready to go again with no damage to the grub tail. There are a few small chips in the paint from getting dropped on concrete while in a striper ’s mouth. I bought a second one in chartreuse for the next trip.

Crimson Ghost
I use 3in and 4in Big Hammers as my go to swimbait on 1/4th and 3/8th ounce swimbait heads. They have a great tail thump/ body wobble that it just right, not too little and not too much. The tail swims on the fall and does it's thing on the slowest of retrieves. I really like the keeled body because it helps it get down to the bottom quick, rather than round body swimbaits that might suspend in comparable situations with a ton of line out or in moving current. They are reasonably durable and they have a great color selection. They are literally the only swimbait I use on a swimbait jighead!

This is very handy for keeping prepared for changing conditions. Packaging is very nice, tucks neatly in my gear bag with other Gulp baits to make it easy access to switch-- I wo n't ever be without it again. Effective striper bait typically includes soft baits that mimic the movement and appearance of natural prey. Common options are swimbaits and eels, which can be used to attract stripers in various water conditions. Additionally, baits made from durable materials can withstand aggressive strikes, making them a popular choice among anglers. Experimenting with different styles and colors can help determine what works best in specific fishing environments.
Choosing the right striper bait depends on various fishing conditions, including water temperature, clarity, and the time of year. In warmer months, live or soft baits that mimic the natural prey of stripers, such as minnows or eels, can be effective. During cooler periods, consider using baits that resemble smaller fish or crustaceans. Additionally, pay attention to local fishing reports and adjust your bait selection based on what is currently working in your area.
Common materials used in striper bait include soft plastics, which are often designed to mimic the texture and movement of natural prey. Many baits are made from durable synthetic materials that provide flexibility and lifelike action in the water. Additionally, some baits may incorporate scents or flavorings to attract fish, enhancing their effectiveness during fishing. Overall, the choice of materials aims to create realistic and enticing options for targeting striper fish.
Yes, specific colors of striper bait can be more effective in different water conditions. In clear waters, natural colors that mimic local baitfish tend to work well, while brighter colors may be more effective in murky or stained waters to attract attention. Additionally, factors such as time of day and weather conditions can influence color choice, with darker colors often performing better in low light and brighter colors in sunny conditions. Experimenting with various shades can help determine what works best for your fishing environment.
To rig striper bait for optimal performance, start by selecting a suitable hook size that matches the bait's profile. Use a simple Texas rig or a jig head to allow for a natural presentation in the water. Ensure the bait is securely attached to prevent it from sliding down the hook during casting. Additionally, consider varying your retrieval speed and technique to mimic the movement of prey, which can attract more strikes from stripers.
The size of striper bait can significantly influence fishing success, as it needs to match the natural prey of the striped bass in the area. Larger baits may attract bigger fish, while smaller baits can be more effective for catching smaller or more cautious fish. Additionally, the size can affect the presentation and movement in the water, which are crucial for enticing strikes. Understanding the local fish behavior and adjusting bait size accordingly can enhance your chances of a successful catch.
Soft baits and hard baits serve different purposes in striper fishing. Soft baits are typically made from flexible materials that mimic the texture and movement of live prey, making them effective for enticing strikes in various water conditions. They can be rigged in multiple ways and often provide a more subtle presentation. In contrast, hard baits are usually made from rigid materials and are designed to create noise and vibrations, which can attract fish from a distance. Each type has its advantages depending on the fishing environment and the behavior of the stripers.
The best season to use striper bait typically aligns with the warmer months, particularly spring through early fall. During this time, striped bass are more active and often feed aggressively, making them more likely to bite. Water temperatures around 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit are generally ideal for targeting these fish. Additionally, fishing during dawn and dusk can increase your chances of success, as striper activity tends to peak during these times.
When selecting striper bait, consider the specific species of striper you are targeting, as different species may prefer varying types of bait. The size and color of the bait can also play a crucial role, as they should mimic the natural prey in the water. Additionally, the water conditions, such as clarity and temperature, can influence the effectiveness of certain baits. Lastly, the time of year and the feeding habits of the fish can help determine the best bait choice for your fishing trip.
