[ When setting up new Fly Reels, backing is the safety valve for a strong fish making a long run. I only use Rio Backing for this important first step.

The backing for a new fly line( had to purchase from DSG online) was exactly what I needed to be ready fro an upcoming trip to fish some of Colorado's best trout waters. It is the correct weight and length to back up the new Rio `` Grand '' WF6F for the trip in early October.

I have use this backing for my Rio fly lines for 15 years or more and been very satisfied. In the past, however, I bought the line in bulk spools of 300 yards, which was considerably cheaper on a per- yard basis. As a general comment, I 've been disappointed to see Dick's carrying so few fly fishing products. Sort of forces us fly fishers to buy online or from specialty fly shops.

But, getting enough of it in one unbroken string is sometimes a problem. Rio offers their backing in 300 yard spools which is why I purchased this product and I could get it locally and did n't have to wait for a mail order delivery

With the purchase of a new fly line, I decided to change out the backing too. I think this is really nice and it went along with the Rio fly line I purchased. Sometimes I stay within the same brand for things.

Fly line backing is a thin, strong line that is attached to the reel and serves as a backup for your fly line. It provides additional line capacity for long runs from fish and helps prevent the fly line from being pulled off the reel. Choosing the right backing is crucial for ensuring you have enough line to handle big catches and for maintaining the overall performance of your fly fishing setup.
Fly line backing is typically made from materials such as Dacron or braided nylon, which offer high strength and low stretch. Dacron is popular for its durability and ease of handling, while braided options provide a thinner diameter for increased line capacity. The choice of material can affect the performance and sensitivity of your fishing experience.
Selecting the appropriate strength of fly line backing depends on the type of fish you are targeting and the weight of your fly line. A general rule is to choose backing that is at least 20% stronger than the breaking strength of your fly line. This ensures that you have enough strength to handle larger fish and unexpected runs.
Yes, different colors of fly line backing can serve various purposes, such as visibility and identification. Bright colors can help you easily see the backing during casting and retrieval, while darker colors may be less visible in certain water conditions. Choosing a color that suits your fishing environment can enhance your overall fishing experience.
The length of fly line backing you need typically ranges from 100 to 300 yards, depending on your fishing style and the type of reel you are using. Longer backing is generally recommended for saltwater fishing or when targeting larger species, while shorter lengths may suffice for freshwater applications. It's important to match the backing length with your reel's capacity for optimal performance.
