I have spent the last few months looking for a harness the is on the lighter side but still really comfortable!! And all my searching stopped here! This harness is great for spending a day at the gym or working on that tough project at the local crag! Bottom line... the aquila is pretty kick butt!!

5 AOmegaIV
[ This harness has a fantastic fit and a quality build. Everything feels solid when straps are manipulated and the padding is just right when in use.

5 Tim R
[ So happy with this harness. Easy to put on, Feels great, light, and keeps your straps out of your way. The belay loop is also slimmer than those super wide belay loops which is nice because it stays out of your way when being belayed. No negatives. A+++

5 Seppa
[ fits well. gear loops are where you expect them. unobtrusive when you 're climbing. haul loop in the back is a bit difficult to access, but I 'm sure I 'd recommend this harness.

5 Cowboy
[ I absolutely love this harness. The quality is amazing and it adjust to fit perfectly no matter what I am waring. I added the new petzl ice clip and it couldn ’ t be a better fit. The Ultralights are excellent cams. But with my recent entry into family life I 'm not getting out much and the lifespan of the Ultralights did n't make sense anymore. Honestly the C4 lineup is n't that much heavier. Especially when incsider where they came from when I started climbing 35 years ago. The new C4 lineup is dreamy.

[ I 've been using this for a month or two and it's been great so far. It fits very comfortably and feels very secure. I tried a couple more harnesses and this was the only one that did n't pinch in the crotch. It was also reasonably priced which was nice.

5 Carrie
[ Loving my new harness. I bought 2 different harnesses and prefer this one. Love the fixed leg loops. No fusing just slip it on and ready to climb. Love the padding and thickness of the leg loops others feel like they cut in to legs. It's super comfy.

[ I bought this about 2 weeks ago. So far only used twice. I am hoping it breaks in a little more. It is very secure, however, at the moment its a little uncomfortable around the thighs. This model does n't have the straps to tighten around the thigh like the regular Corax Harness an is elastic.

Exceeds expectations. This is a great addition to my climbing gear. it's so light I did n't notice it even on. It works flawlessly going up or down the rope. At twice the cost of other ascenders its a little expensive, but my life if worth it. Hope yours it to you too...

5 ManSpider
So, these ARE my first set of ascenders, so I do n't have much to compare them to... That said, they work better than I thought they could, allowing me to quickly and securely climb vertical ropes and hang from them without fear of falling. Smooth up glide, secure lock, and easy thumb access to the latch makes these a prime climbers tool!

5 the Hight Plains Drifter
I am a 64 year old man, 6' 3 '', 255 lbs. I use this ascender for roof climbing and tree trimming. I know. Little old to be monkeying in trees, but I like to do things myself. The Petzl Ascender has yet to `` let me down ''. Actually it `` let's me down '' perfectly.

5 rumscrumbly
[ This is everything you need in an ascender, it's light but feels bomber in your hands. Not tiny either, you could get a bear paw in there. Super smooth moving up the rope and the catch is easy to work with one hand. 'Biner holes big enough for about anything... just another solid Petzl product!

5 Evil Dave
[ Bought my ascender after wanting one for years. Wish I had n't waited it's amazing piece of equipment. It makes the job easy. If you need a belay device look no further.

Have used other light weight harnesses especially BD. While they have served great and fine but needed more security for glacial peaks& mountains like Denali and Rainier. The solid loops to hang carabiners gives that peace of mind. Bottomline- lightest and strongest in the market. Petzel Altitude comes right close but I like Mammut colors as they are visible in whiteout or glacial peaks like Denali, Rainier, 8000m,.

5
I bought this originally for rescue in my job as a ski patroller and have found myself bringing it on every ski touring trip where I may need a harness instead of my BD Couloir. While the Mammut does not pack down as small it is more robust and comfortable. The small bit of extra size and weight is negligible in my opinion.

5
Just used this climbing mt hood, did great. I love that you do n't have to take off skis to put it on.

5
Very Happy with this harness. I used it while ski mountaineering and it was great.

5
Perfect harness for ski mountaineering. Lightweight, reasonably comfortable( would n't want to hang for too long in it), and very easy to get on/off with skis on.

5 Andres
[ This is the perfect non- assisted braking device in my opinion. With steel inserts for rope wear and an all- aluminium construction I know it will last for a long, long time. It's a tuber device, so there's not much to say in terms of function. What makes it stand out is it's very burly build, yet it is still very light and affordable. I always bring at least one of these when climbing, and have a few in the reserves to always have some one hand. It works great in guide mode, and this is my go- to for belaying from the top and rappelling. Ca n't recommend it enough.

5 Western Slopers Resole
[ This is the best ATC I 've used for smaller diameter alpine ropes. It breaks much better when catching lead falls on my 7. 9mm alpine ropes, does n't heat up the way traditional aluminum devices do on rappel, and is still pretty light, if that's something you care about.

5
Heat dispersion is great. Wo n't burn your hand off after a quick belay or rappel.

5
This is a great durable belay device that can be used in guide mode. It has a really solid feel and it my go- to when I need a tube- style belay device. Definitely overkill for someone just getting into the sport or someone who really only climbs in a gym, but a great to have for anyone who's going on some longer climbs outside.

5
Needed a belay device for skinny ropes and the Alpine Belay fits the bill. Works well with thick ropes to but is n't quite as smooth as an ATC. Works surprisingly well on frozen ropes.

[ This is a simple, easy to use harness. I am 220 5'- 10 and the M/L fits over my ski clothes just fine. It is very comfy while using and seems to be very well made.

5 epwalsh
[ I 've owned one of these for a year and used several times for glacier travel in the Cascades, including a mountaineering course on Mt. Baker during which I was suspended in a crevasse with this harness for 15 to 20 minutes while others were learning how to haul me out. Despite it being so light, it's actually surprisingly comfortable due to the fairly wide, flat leg loops. It's also very easy to get on and off while wearing crampons or skis, which is essential for an alpine harness.

5 Frisky
[ My old harness was embarrassingly old last year on Mount Rainier. Upgraded this year to the Petzl harness. Much, much better. Super light, easy to manipulate( even with frozen fingers), packs down small for the hike in.

4 Skierguy
[ I 've taken this out a few times and it's done the job well. Lightweight and packable. I 'm a smaller guy 5' 8 '', 175 and with insulating layers on the medium is a close fit.

4 Nick
[ I bought this harness a month ago so that I have an extra to take friends climbing who do n't have their own gear. The harness is simple and easy to use but comfortable for an alpine bod. I bought it in a small and the size range is a bit more narrow than I expected but it still works. I made a 6' 1 '' friend squeeze into it. He complained a bit but it got the job done. Overall, a great harness to have around.

The videos on the different harnesses are super helpful. I was really torn about which size to get because I need this to fit over ski gear. I got the M/L and need to cinch it fully down in more lightweight gear, so I think the S/M would have worked fine. [ This rope feels great when belaying and when setting anchors, lead climbing, etc. the sheath on the rope has been durable in my use. My use has mainly been lead climbing on easy to moderate routes and top roping with my kids.

[ This rope is light weight, rarely tangles, nice in a grigri( doesnt slip) and easy to clean. We bought the black variant because we have the orange 60 meter but I suggest them both theyre sick

5 Nick
[ This rope is really good at staying clean while at the crags. My friends nicknamed it `` sexy '' because of the nice feel and sleek look. Also, blood blends in with the colors of the black/white/red rope, which is a plus.

5 CragsForDays
[ Was looking for an affordable harness that could accommodate multiple different people/body sizes and this harness did not disappoint. Easy to put on and adjust, especially loved the dual buckles that keep the gear loops even. The padding is somewhat bulky but not terribly so.

5 Kam5
[ I have a smaller waist and larger thighs and after about a month of searching for a harness this one was perfect! The double adjusters on the waist and adjusters on the legs make it really easy to adjust to the right size. It's a bulkier harness but the comfort is worth it if you are n't too worried about weight.

This rope handles great through both my grigri and other tubular devices like ATC and Megajul. Gives super soft catches to both leader and follower/top- rope. Super cool color too. The smallest nit I have is that the middle marker fades away a bit easily.

5 Mia A
I really like this rope. Though I did not realize that the We Care ropes are assorted and do not look like the photo, I am actually very satisfied with what I got; a beautiful, unique rope:) It moves through my belay devices so smoothly and after having it for almost a month it still looks brand new.

5 James B
I bought this harness because I wanted a low weight, compact harness for mountain guiding and glacier travel. It worked perfectly and was super comfortable to wear while traversing the glacier even with my backpack on. Also, in general it is a really comfortable harness to wear for top rope and gym lead. I have n't used it for sport or trad yet, but I 'll update when I have.

5
I originally got this harness for ice climbing as it has 6 different ice tool clipper spots( on both sides, 12 total) of the waist. This allowed me to put my ice tool clippers exactly where I wanted them versus where they have to be on other harnesses. It is very lightweight with functional gear loops. I recently took it alpine climbing and it felt awesome having it on all day, even through the more scrambly areas of the climb. Would highly recommend especially for women that have a bigger chest or hips and need to put ice tool clippers in specific spots in order to see them. I have a Large which works great with winter layers but I could have also fit a medium. I am 5' 6 '' and 170 lbs.

5
Somehow this harness has less padding and is lighter weight than the Ophir slide or the black diamond momentum harness, but is actually more comfortable when sitting in it for a long time. I 'd highly recommend if you have a bit more money to throw in for a harness that you want to be lightweight and still comfy. Fits true to size.

5
Amazin harness which is surprisingly comfortable and does not consume any space in the backpack. I am using it for trad climbing. I climb with 14 cams, 12 slings, and three sets of nuts/tricams. I also carry cordlette, belay device and bunch of lockers. All these can be comfortably clipped to the harness. The front gear loops are bigger and the gear is easy to unclip/clip. I use the front gear loops for cams and draws. The rear loops I use for nuts, lockers and belay devices. The harness has also a small gear loop at the rear in the middle. I use this for the nut tool and sometimes the radio. The harness feels good on my body and I do n't even feel it while climbing. The only little thing I found is the seem in front without any padding pushing against my bones. I did not experience it with my previous harness ocun Ego. Anyway, it is not too annoying and I might get used to it very soon.

5 Jacinto F
This harness is comfortable for a full day in the alpine. I spent 16+ hours wearing this harness scrambling, alpine trad climbing, rappelling, and doing some sketchy snow crossings. While a bit heavier than some of the Petzl options it ’s 100% worth it for the comfort.

Super lightweight harness great for ski traverses. The sizing is a bit smaller than expected.

4
This is a great ultralight harness& super versatile and comfortable( for what it is). Excellent functionality and some of the best racking on this type of harness. Super light and compact too. I prefer this to the Petzl Fly. That said- the sizing is off. I 'm a 32 '' waist and based on Mammut's sizing chart I should be a comfortable medium. In reality I barley squeeze into the medium's hip belt. I have thick legs and the legs are fine though. Overall, I 'd highly recommend this harness, with the caviot that folks should try it on in- store. Hopeful that Mammut can address the sizing issue, but likely plan to size up on this harness. Would be 5 stars, but for the sizing issue.

4 Ian O
I bought this for a very particular application and it is perfect. It is incredibly light and it barely takes up any pack space. It is as comfortable as you can expect from something in this category and has solid attachments for the minimal gear I carry in these situations. Plus, it's awesome to have a sub 2oz harness to toss around for emergency kits.

[ The purpose of this biner is to avoid cross- loading while belaying. Pros:- Easy to install on belay loop.- Does n't require opening the gate to open the belay- loop lock( like the BD one does).- Has a thick spine and large locking barrel to prevent a gri- gri from sliding in either direction.- The locking barrel is damped, and so does n't move if rattled while not locked all the way.- The locking barrel has a lot of extra travel- even if it started to come open, it would have to twist many times before allowing the gate to open.- Belay- loop lock spring tension is nice and high.- Quite light for the functionality! Cons:- The belay- loop gate makes racking a gri- gri on your harness slightly more awkward.( The grigri ends up sitting at the large end, and the wire gate sits on your gear loop).- The wide spine( a feature noted above) reduces the versatility of the biner, since it does n't fit into small holes( bolts, etc) as easily. But that's alright, since it's meant just for belaying anyway.

5 smilingtoad
[ I got this carabiner for both caving and climbing belay. For caving I like it on my bobbin because it prevent crossloading when you are doing change overs and rebelays. For climbing it has been great to keep things properly orientated. Love the color too!!

4 Gearjunkie
[ Pro: Never have to worry about accidentally loading my ATC onto this biner's gate or spine while belaying or rappelling. Cons: My belay loop is 2. 5 cm in width and 7mm at the thickest point, which makes it difficult to easily slip the loop in and out through the internal gate as it often catches between the opened internal gate and the frame. My friend has a thinner belay loop and this was n't an issue at all though. Color also easily wears off at points of contacts, though does n't jeopardize integrity of its strength. Overall, would still recommend

[ I had used the smart 2. 0 before. I but this one ‘ cus it ’s pink and cute and sometimes I like cute things. The carabiner style takes a bit of getting used to, but it ’s super clear when it is and is not locked. Did I mention it ’s got a bunch of pink on it?

5
I wanted to try out a new device after using a gri gri for a while now. The smart 2. 0 is much lighter and very smooth to use. This device really shines for me when lead belaying it's the smoothest assisted brake device you can get and not to mention at an awesome price point. 10/10 recommend.

5
Easy to use once, like everything new, you figure it out, intuitive never the less. Holds well and is nice to have piece of mind if anything happens of for neubies. Assistance for belayer when working a route puts ATC style devices to shame! Also still worked on icy and wet ropes where the Grigri struggles.

5 Luca D
Super comfortable to use! very safe, never dropped or slipped. I wish Mammut would make a smart Alpine 2 like they did with the first smart. Super light and compact, would highly recommend as a cheaper alternative to Grigri.

[ The double rappel loops are perfect for 2 rope solo top- roping, takes away that over crowded, overloaded single loop syndrome.... And, its Metolius, how could you go wrong!

4 moutaingoat333
[ I really like my Metolius Harness and that basically everything on this harness is a hard point. The waist buckle is an update from their old double back buckles( they are still on the leg loops which make adjustment a little tenuous) which is bomber. Contrary to many waist buckles, this one latches down on the nylon strap when it is tightened inhibiting any accidental openings of the waist strap. I think this is an improvement in speed of putting on the harness over the old double back buckles that you had to feed through each for adjustment. The foam padding is concentrated which could make long hanging belays a little uncomfortable.

4 Adamm H
[ I have had this for a couple months. Wearing it is comfortable, and the gear loops work well. I really like having two belay loops too. It is uncomfortable to hang in for long periods of time, and because part of the waist band is not stitched to the tightening strap, it can be a little annoying to get on just right. For trad climbing or multipitching without hanging belays, it's great. It just wo n't replace a sport climbing harness.

[ I bought this bag with the hopes that it would be able to store all of my climbing gear to bring to the crag. Not only does it fit a ton of gear, but its ’ wide straps also make it pretty comfortable to carry as well. Convenient top pocket for smaller items is a plus as well!

[ I bought this harness to replace a worn out Black Diamond, and I am so glad that I did. The adjustment system is very user- friendly, and feels secure. There is no uncomfortable pinching as I send my projects, and I ca n't wait to take this outside to the local crag. Also, I love this color way. Super sharp.

5
This harness gives me the comfort of taking big whips and light on my hips. Used the Ophir Slide 3 for years and just found a new upgrade. The hard draw loops are way nice for single pitch sport outdoors as I do n't have to worry about my draws flying all over the place. The rigid plastic keeps them close to my body allowing for faster clipping even though I 'm not that fast. Well good and love Mammut

5 Glen L
Easy to adjust and wear, comfortable too. Use this several times a week for indoor climbing and also outdoors. Has held up nicely so far.

The mips system is there it does n't change the feeling neither rhe fit. The headlamp attachment is easy to use and secure. The back attachment is not as easily adjustable as some other brand, but he it's no big deal.

5 Melissa M.
This helmet fits me perfectly and is much lighter than my half dome helmet I 've been wearing for years. Plus, MIPS. Ca n't go wrong with this upgrade.

5 Devon M.
This is the slimmest, lightest helmet all while providing the best protection out there. The weight makes hiking to exit points almost feel like I forgot to bring a helmet at times, while longer delay times off exit don ’ t rattle the neck on opening. This helmet will fit as snugly as you ’ d like while maintaining comfort. I can vouch that this helmet ain ’ t going anywhere on your head, even when going from a 60mph freefall to a dead stop.

5 daniel i.
A helmet is for protecting your head and not for saving weight!! Great style, I dont usually wear black but this thing pulls together any outfit you have. I have n't tried hot summer climbing with it yet, but I 'll wear it over any super lightweight helmet. I took a 50+ footer, upside down, back slamming whipper in the Valley last season and vowed to always wear a MIPS helmet in case that ever happens again.

5 Sarah S.
I recently decided I needed a new helmet and like the idea of something slightly bulkier and heavier than what I used before but also more protective. Well, I was in a crash and the helmet did it ’s job and actually saved me.

5 runnerin
[ I 've been indoor rock climbing( top rope) for about 5 months, so I do not have a ton of experience here, but I started out belaying with the Black Diamond ATC- XP belay device that came with the great BD `` starter kit. '' Having some experience with that setup, but wanting something with the added safety of assisted braking without dropping$$ on a GriGri, I decided to upgrade to this. It is very similar to using an ATC, and the assisted braking works great- makes it much easier to hold a climber who may be doing regular takes on a challenging route. Lowering is very smooth, and it only took a few test belays with my partner to feel comfortable with the lowering action. I use it with a BD Magnetron Gridlock carabiner, which works well and gives extra safety too. It is also very lightweight, but looks like it will hold up for a long time. Very happy with it so far! A note on the color of `` Dark Cloud ''- it looks grey but in person it is a light blue/grey- if you are picky about that sort of thing:)

5 Jon S
[ This is an elegant no- moving- parts design that provides rapid and secure braking action, while permitting smooth easy lowering. Learning to use it is easy and takes very little practice. I have previously used the original Smart and the Smart Alpine( for two ropes) and I like this evolution of the product.

5 CBearGucciGuWhopp
[ The rope slides through like a raccoon on a water slide, looks like something Jimmy Neutron whipped up, and she ’s tougher than Connor McGregor

5 Buddy
[ Just got into climbing, used this first time at gym and was told I definitely have belayed before as I was smooth and operated the smart 2. 0 like I had been using it for years, this thing is far easier than the ATC style belay devices, my climbing partner had a ATC and she was having a hard time lowering me down, was jerky and sloppy at best, mine were smooth and painless, and I 'm a one time user of this smart 2. 0, that right there has me sold me on how great this item is, if you are new or just want a earlier belay device you have found it.

5 Liljeeper
[ I bought this device a little over a month ago, love it! The smoothness of the descent is awesome! It ’s so much smoother to use than your standard belay device. Happy with the purchase, still want a grigri+ tho!

The dry treatment has been very effective in keeping the rope clean and avoiding to pick up too much debris. It feel great to handle and could be used by anyone. I would recommend to rope for its durability mostly, but on the other hand, it means it is on the heavy side, which makes it a little less pleasant to carry around.

I bought this product a week before hiking Mt Whitney, Lone Pine, CA. I was able to get through the chute early morning with confidence. Serac Crampons did not add much weight, kept my feet securely planted in the snow/ice, and allowed me to confidently hike up the chute. I had no problems using this product and would recommend it for anyone who is planning to hike in similar conditions.

5 fred2
Got the strap version. Purchased this model due to the additional holes on the side of the fwd crampon. I figured if I need better control of the crampon, I could use the trailing hole on the side of the crampon to tie over the boot. This boot overhangs 3 inches per side. Of course I also purchased the large center bar. This is not for technical activity. I have a trip in January to Svalbard. Average temperature then is- 40 C which is also- 40 F. Polar bears to people are 2 to 1. From what I researched, boot mfg and ice traction mfg do n't talk to one another. Each one is in their own little world and the other one does n't exist. I would have gone for the Contact model except it does n't have the additional side holes. The mandatory questions in this review are irrelevant to my quest

5 RobK
I bought these crampons for an upcoming expedition to Denali. I recently took them on a winter training session to climb Mt. Washington. It was a perfect test as Mt. Washington was in usual winter form( white out/high winds/blowing graupel) I used the serac crampons/strap version with my La Sportiva G2 boots. The combination was terrific. The combination was very stable and had plenty of traction on ice and snow. These worked well even on higher angle sections that required french stepping and/or front pointing.

5 Shawn P
These things are great. I bought to use with my Scarpa Zodiac Tech GTX. The front bail is easy to step into. The 12- points of contact make for quick travel. The heel- bail is easy to adjust and snaps onto your boot. I do have a little bit of rust forming on the bottoms of the crampons. Not sure if its the crampons or something I picked up on the mountain. I also found the thin strap hard to pull with gloves on. More surface area towards the end of the strap would be nice.

[ This rope was great, although due to a misplaced stopper knot my rope retrieval system snagged and we did n't have time to re- climb the route. If anyone sees an orange rope hanging from the southern chute of Mt Winchell you 're welcome to take it, just do n't climb on it! Would buy again.

[ I bought this for mountaineering in the cascades. Perfect size. Lightweight. Stays dry, light, and pretty even on dirty glaciers. Will buy again.

[ Bought this rope for glacier travel and potentially rappelling into crevasses. Climbed Mount Baker this past weekend with a 5 person team using it and worked like a charm. Rope sat overnight on some wet snow and felt as dry the next morning as when we put it down. Rope also got stepped on a few times with crampons with 0 damage to the sheath which was nice. Used it for some dry run crevasse rescue training and handled like a breeze.

This harness fits nice and snug around the waist while still accommodating females with bigger muscular legs. It's comfy, offers plenty of places to clip gear, and my personal favorite touch, the attention to detail with the stitches allowing you to know when the harness is worn and needs to be replaced. Great for beginners or experts. I 've used it both inside and outside for climbs.

Super comfy and lightweight harness! I can wear it for hours and honestly forget that it's on. I especially love the 2 more heavy duty gear loops in the front. I 've used this harness climbing in the gym and outdoors, climbing both sandstone and limestone and the it's holds up really well, it's super durable. I definitely recommend it

Picked up climbing for the first time this year. Love the colors and fits very nicely, 5 ’ 2 ” 135lbs, fit my legs and waist nicely. Cushions make falling comfortable as well.

This harness is extremely comfortable and well- designed. The padding is supportive without being bulky, and it distributes weight evenly, making hanging and belaying feel secure and comfortable. The 3- slide adjustment system makes it super easy to dial in a perfect fit, whether layering for cold weather or climbing in warmer conditions. The gear loops are sturdy and well- placed, offering plenty of room for racking without feeling cluttered. The materials feel high quality and durable, and the overall construction inspires confidence. It stays comfortable even during longer climbing sessions. Overall, this is a top- tier harness that balances comfort, adjustability, and performance. Highly recommend for both indoor and outdoor climbing.

Great harness& love all the adjustable straps. Love the breathable material on the inside of the waist& legs!!! It ’s not as comfortable when coming down( it can dig into the back of your thighs.) I also am not a fan of the light color for outdoor climbing. It gets dirty REALLY fast! This to me is more of an indoor climbing harness.

Frequently Asked Questions For Climbing Safety Gear

When choosing climbing safety gear, consider factors such as the type of climbing you will be doing, the gear's weight, and its durability. Look for equipment that meets safety standards and is made from high-quality materials. Comfort and fit are also crucial, as well as the ease of use during climbs.

Proper sizing for climbing safety gear is essential for both comfort and safety. Most manufacturers provide sizing charts based on measurements such as waist and leg circumference for harnesses. Always try on gear before purchasing, and ensure it fits snugly without being restrictive.

For beginners, essential climbing safety gear typically includes a harness, helmet, and climbing shoes. A belay device is also important for safely managing the rope during climbs. As you progress, you may want to invest in additional gear such as carabiners and protection devices.

It's crucial to inspect your climbing safety gear before each use. Look for signs of wear and tear, such as frayed straps, damaged buckles, or cracks in helmets. Regular maintenance and proper storage can extend the life of your gear and ensure your safety while climbing.

Many climbing safety gear items are versatile and can be used for various types of climbing, including sport, trad, and indoor climbing. However, some gear may be specifically designed for certain activities, so it's important to choose equipment that matches your climbing style and environment.
