I have not used the Trail Shot extensively, but it has worked very well when I have used it. I tend to use the MSR Hyperflow more frequently for speed, when weight is not a factor. The Trail shot is a little more labor intensive for my arthritic hands, but it is an excellent option.

Used this on multiple bikepacking trips with questionable and/or limited water on some occasions. It's lightweight and never let me down yet.

Love this filter!! It takes up almost no space in your pack. I really like the option to drink straight from it, and when I fill bottles, it goes quick. The plastic does n't 'rebound' as quick as I 'd like when filling, but it 'll still fill a few liters quickly. Definitely only good for 1 person, maybe 2. Would n't plan to have a whole team using it, but thats not what its for. Prefect for 1 person though. Great addition to my pack!

Used on one hike, works well so far. Vey comfortable to use( you do n't have to float rubber bottles empty- handedly in cold stream water at- 6C like with other filters). I hope it will last.

This filter is built to last. That's why I spent more to buy it. The sturdy build is a great feature and really, one of the only drawbacks-- it's a little heavy. I feel like Katadyn would benefit from a video of how to use and care for the filter. They could even put a QR code on the side for first- time users. I found a good fan- made video that taught me a lot. I found that the pump was easiest to use in the sitting position. Lots of elbow grease needed, but very effective. I see this filter lasting for years to come and I ca n't wait! NOTE- On day two, after taking it apart, it stopped pumping. I took it apart a few times and put it back together, but I was worried I had a lemon. After 3 or 4 times doing that, it started pumping again. Almost certainly user error--- just a heads up.

I bought this 2- 3 years ago for use on scout backpacking trips and emergency use during hurricane season. The thought was to have zero worries with water supply no matter where I was. The troop had another MSR filter with lower filtration pumping 1L per minute. Scouts became impatient and those were quickly abandoned to use mine. Win# 1! We recently took a long distance backpacking trip and most groups used micropur tablets for sterilization, but not wanting to wait used this filter instead for immediate water consumption without an altered taste. Water supplies were typically streams or in some cases cisterns from rain collection or pumps which still needed sterilization. Win# 2! One camp ran out of water in their cistern with zero streams for decent water nearby. I said not a problem and we filtered out of a cattle pond full of all kinds of bugs, algae and things no one wanted to deal with. This pump had zero issues and no one got sick. Win# 3! Lessons learned: most of the time, filtration just occurred over one or two days, this last trip was longer. If the nalgene was too tight, it would cause leaks between the filter and the water bottle. The same occurred if the gray ring at the bottom was too tight to the red cylinder on the filter. Loosening those connections brought everything into alignment with no leaks. A gentle tightening was all that was needed. After each trip, I do pump some clean water through the filter thinking one or 2 extra liters wo n't impact the life of the filter. I hang the filter to dry out the entire length of hose, and invert the filter section with fibers so it drains as well. I 've had zero issues with the performance of this filter and have full confidence whenever it is used. I still carry the maintenance kit with me, but it has yet to be used.

WE have been using the Guardian Purifier for several years now and just purchased out third one. We use it in a wilderness camp for up to 9 people for two weeks duration. We have never had a problem with the device or supplying ample water for each group. Several of our guests have purchased on for their own use after using the Guardian in our camp.

Love the peace of mind! Easy to use& fills bottles quickly. We wanted one filter that we could use on any trip no matter where in the world, and no back- flushing makes this a dream.

I got this as a splurge for a 5 day loop in Tanner and out Grandview in April when the water was running high due to the past few years of Norovirus being prevalent in 2021 and 2022 for a group of 4 and it delivered with just a few minor issues. We did settle water for 1- 2 hours before filtering except for one day to filter directly after pulling from the river but I did n't note a difference in performance. For notes- we had the issue of leaking out the large filter housing O- ring when someone in the party overtightened it but we were able to resolve that after playing with it a bit( had us worried for a moment we were going to be onto tabs or boiling when it first started!!!) so it might be nice to make that note more visible in the manual as it was very easy to accidently do( I read on the website before going). We also had some leaking out of the back of the pump head as I have seen in other reviews( just a few drops here and there generally) and I was not able to resolve that even with slow pumping. Here I just made sure that the clean water bottle was fully attached so any drip from the back of the pump head would not go into the bottle. I would say we generally filtered much slower than 2. 5 L/min even with clean water( more like 0. 5- 1 L/min) as I had read that a common failure was the pump handle pin can break on this system so we generally tried not to apply too much pressure to the handle but instead ran slow and constant and tried to make sure not to exert too much pressure at the top and bottom of the pump rise. I overall still prefer gravity filters as they are just so much easier when we filter most of our water at camp( yes I am lazy:) but for the Colorado River and something that handles virus removal I was pleased with the purchase. Thanks to the team there at MSR and hopefully see everyone out there on the trails

I appreciate the filter speed and filtration. I think that all the people complaining about their broken filters are ungrateful. I ’ d bet they never went on a 30 mile out and back with 6k vert. The unit is light for what it is. This is an excellent design. They designed a lightweight product that works when perfectly when used correctly. There is a notch between the bottom rubber grip and the frosted main body of the filter. Tighten the grip to the main body until you reach an obvious notch. Then tighten the bottle onto the filter without touching the frosted plastic. It will work flawlessly.

If budget is no object- then this is the filter to buy. I also have the Sawyer Gravity system which costs 4x cheaper. Not just a mere filter, it is a also purifier- and the carbon filter is the icing on the cake and makes the filtered water pleasant tasting. Everything about the package is pure premium. MSR did not skimp on the components and it looks and feel as expensive as it actually is. Operating is easy. Long term storage is a bit tedious- it is a 1 hour procedure- but I do n't mind doing to ensure tip top performance and longevity. I know some complain about the flow rate. I never measured- I mean between the claimed 2 mins to reputedly slower 2m30secs in the field.. it is rather irrelevant to me for my use. Which is base camp use where I wont be moving for days. Part of enjoying the outdoors is the being calm about everything and 10L filtered water that comes about a few mins late, is a non- issue for me. And it is really great to produce so much filtered water for camp use effortlessly AND it is supercomforting to know that it is( if the claims are to be believed) the only filter to meet military grade specifications. That seems overkill for me but then why not! Downsides: long term storage and PRICE. This filter is insanely priced.

It's just a great and reliable system. Even my kids can use it. We are a family of 5 who go camping with friends and we need a lot of water often we use 70 liters on a weekend. With the gravity system we never run out of water and the system does not require attention so it's very good for camping with small kids.

I purchased this filter two years ago for big group and family trips. This year my wife and I took our two kids on an 11- day trip on the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainer. The filter performed great, even in dried- up silty/tea- stained lakes. At first, I thought this filter was overkill- many people use squeeze bottle- style filters. Though having to make water for the four of us over 11 days, I was happy I did. Most days, I was filtering around 20 liters of water per day. We filtered into a separate 10l bladder so anyone could quickly fill the cook pot, bottle, or brush teeth. When stowed, the filter, dirty water bag, and extra balder are chunky. However, the weight is negligible once you put this into the group gear pile that gets divvied up between the party. It was consistent with other group gear items in size and weight- rainfly, first- aid kit, stove and fuel, etc. Lastly, the flow rate is brought up on this filter. The filter works great if you hang it high and routinely flush the system. At the end of each season I 've owned this, I `` winterize '' the filter by following the disinfecting directions supplied with the filter. This extra step makes a big difference in the overall performance of the filter.

Bought this purifier for a basecamp location with stream water in North Wales mountains. Quickly got an efficient system in place filtering 10 litres every day for next days use. This product, when used as demonstrated on the MSR website is a game changer for our camp, saving time and fuel boiling water for drinking and cooking. Used every day for 5 weeks so far. Just back in civilisation and Wifi for a few weeks so about to sterilise it.

I use this bottle for hiking and camping. I take it in the bottle sling and have the cup and the firebox nano in the pouch. I do not have any concerns when walking around through the woods away from my base camp. The very best bottle you could ever have and this is my second one. I had the first one for several years and have replaced the filter twice and now it ’s my daughters for her hikes. Wish it wasn ’ t so expensive but you also get what you pay for so I get that. One day I will be able to afford the titanium version and give it a try. Keep up the great work!!

I used this product for travel and loved having it- it's so handy to be able to filter water anywhere on the go and pour it into other vessels or add electrolytes to the bottle. The one tricky thing was getting used to all the different pieces and how they fit together, I had multiple mishaps where the entire bottle spilled or leaked in my bag or on the plane. One I fully understood how all the pieces fit together and was able to make sure that each piece was properly screwed on etc, I did n't seem to have the problem. It does leak when under pressure though, either from electrolytes that fizz or from the pressure on an airplane.
