I have used this filter for the past 18 years both OCONUS and CONUS. This is by far the best, most reliable portable manual water filter there is. I have filtered from numerous sources of water in Asia/Southeast Asia and from everything in the backcountry in the America's to include cattle tanks and have not had any waterbourne illnesses while using this filter. Katadyn is the gold standard when it comes to all forms of water treatment and at this price, you can not beat it anywhere else. A little research on water treatment will help you with knowing its capabilities, its maintenance requirements and preventing cross contamination but other than that, do n't hesitate.

Pros:- light weight- easy to use- batteries can be found anywhere- no taste like other methods of sterilization( iodine/ chlorine) Cons:- need to carry spare batteries- takes 90 seconds of stirring I have had this product for a couple years now and it still works great. I 've never gotten sick from drinking the water from it. It is really great for backpacking and travel in less developed country. If you use the lithium AA's it really takes forever to run out. However it's always a good idea to have spare batteries.

Purchased for long runs 20+ miles out in the national parks and trails. Even with hydration vest and water bladder, replenishing water is still something I keep thinking when the time goes on. Love this bottle filter, being a good size of 1L to fill my bottles and bladder. Quickly filters well, easy to squeeze and use. Most of all is fairly small to pack away into my vest and continue my runs with no issue. Recommend to anyone who want a nice easy, packable, bottle filterer.

Bought this in preparation for a hike in desert canyon country. Used it to filter 30+ liters of very dirty water without any problem at all with clogging. Purified water looked good, tasted fine, no sediment. Faint odor remained, however- the original water stank from decaying leaves, etc. My friends gave up on their conventional filters after a few liters and Steripens were useless because of turbidity.

I have a collection of water filters including the older model MSR hyperflow filter and the new 3 ounce Sawyer, but this one ca n't help but make you smile when used. The Sawyer is a pain to fill the dirty water bag, used a Platypus bag with only slightly better results. The older Hyperflow filter is a pain to backflush and gets hard to pump, replaced the filter but the new one is even harder to pump. This new high- dollar filter leaked water out the handle- side of the pump when new, took it apart and spread the lube around better and it sealed up fine. Used it on a overnight pack and was very very happy with how little effort the pump takes and how fast it fills a bottle. It is a little bigger than the hyperflow but sooo much better. The inlet filter looks overkill and will be hard to use in a small water seep but I am sure it will work out. Overall it is so fast and easy to use it is well worth the price.

Purifying some ice cold water in the Weminuche Wilderness! Performs flawlessly! Reminds me of camping as a child pumping water from the pump in the ground! So easy to use it's a breeze. I recommend this product A++

I could say it's the most advanced, easy to use portable purifier on the market, but that's old news. Yes, it is bulky and heavy for backpacking compared to filtering- only options, but it purifies(!), and freezing will not render it unusable. It is also perfect for international travel, mission trips, and home emergency kits.

[ I bought this for my daughter who is now in Nicaragua. With widespread contamination of wild water( lakes, rivers etc) with human feces and even tap water uncertain, I wanted the anti virus feature. I have used Sweetwater, and other brands for bacteria and cysts but the no chemical virus elimination is promising. Since I have not tested this in a clinical lab setting I ca n't promise you there are no viruses. I will say the thing pumps water like no tomorrow and the design seems sturdy and simple. While most people are using bottled water and even Coke when the local retail does n't do bottled water, my daughter is free as bird to pump her own. I will say that I have some other brand bottles besides Nalgene and they do n't work with the clean side threads on the Guardian. So you must carry at least one Nalgene standard widemouth with you.

I did n't realize that some portable purifiers are n't appropriate to take to various places in Indonesia, Latin America, etc., but after learning about this one, I find it superior. Even at home, I ’ ve been using a regular water filter, and I didn ’ t realize it doesn ’ t work as well as this does for actual fresh- tasting water. After having a dog contract giardia, this is my go- to when hiking with my four- legged, and I plan on taking it whenever I travel out of the country. It ’s easy to carry, with two separate areas to attach cords or straps.

Great filter. I still have the one which was purchased with my Miniworks, but I decided I wanted to have a spare on hand in case that one broke or became too worn to be used. No complaints on them.

I have had a WaterWorks filter for years. The only time I had to replace the filter was because I dropped it on cement while cleaning it. I do try to filter the cleanest water I can find and, when it is cloudy( full of St. Helen's ash for instance) I collect it in a bucket and let it settle before filtering if possible.

I 've never had a slight question about these filters effectiveness. I depend on them to keep me safe on the trail and happy when I return home.

I have a circa 1992 Waterworks filter that I used long ago and put back into storage. After contacting MSR to see if I could use this cartridge in my old filter,( they responded with an email confirmation), I purchased this. Took it on a recent 5- day trip to Norther Wisconsin. Initially in a tannin- filled lake, it pumped quickly. Then it plugged up after 1. 5 liters( hard pumping, trickle). I took out the cleaning pad, cleaned and got it working again at full- rate. It regularly plugged but I was warned that this would occur in this type of water. As we paddled to other lakes, I found that the performance improved( could pump 4+ liters of water with no cleaning necessary). There was one other filter in the group and people were impressed with this filter's performance and field maintainability. The filter then would not draw water in on the suction stroke. I took it apart, and found that there was grit in the umbrella valve. Cleaned it and put the pump back together and it worked flawlessly again. I 'm highly impressed with the overall performance. I like the internal carbon matrix that can also filter out bad taste.
When selecting an outdoor water filter, consider factors such as the type of contaminants you need to remove, the filter's flow rate, and its capacity. It's also important to think about the weight and portability of the filter, especially if you plan to carry it on long hikes or camping trips. Additionally, check the filter's lifespan and maintenance requirements to ensure it meets your outdoor needs.
Outdoor water filters typically use various filtration methods to remove impurities from water, including mechanical filtration, activated carbon, and UV light. Mechanical filters physically block contaminants, while activated carbon absorbs chemicals and improves taste. Some advanced models may also use UV technology to kill bacteria and viruses, providing a comprehensive solution for safe drinking water.
There are several types of outdoor water filters, including pump filters, gravity filters, and bottle filters. Pump filters are versatile and can filter large volumes of water quickly, while gravity filters are ideal for group camping as they require minimal effort. Bottle filters are convenient for solo adventurers, allowing you to drink directly from the source.
To assess the durability of an outdoor water filter, look for materials that are resistant to wear and tear, such as high-quality plastics or stainless steel. Check user reviews and product specifications for information on the filter's construction and any warranties offered. Additionally, consider the filter's performance in various conditions, such as extreme temperatures or rough terrain.
Most outdoor water filters are designed to remove common contaminants such as bacteria, protozoa, and sediment, but not all filters can eliminate viruses or chemical pollutants. It's essential to check the filter's specifications to understand what contaminants it can effectively remove. For comprehensive protection, you may need to combine filtration methods or use a filter specifically designed for certain contaminants.
