Softball Pitcher Tips: How to Have an Effective Arm Swing
Improve your pitching technique with these tips on how to have an effective arm swing.
A pitcher’s arm swing is crucial for two reasons: speed and accuracy. Without a proper arm swing, it can be hard for a pitcher to throw strikes consistently.
“A nice, tight arm swing makes for more accurate pitches,” former professional softball player Jessica Vogel says. “It allows us to generate maximum power.”
ARM SWING STEPS
Your arm swing should follow a consistent motion. To perform an effective arm swing:
- Stride toward the plate, thinking about reaching high in the sky. You should keep your arms straight and inline to help prevent soreness.
- Think about brushing by your ear. Then, reach for the ground on the way down.
- Brush past your hips and side, and be sure to finish with a strong wrist snap.
ARM SWING DRILL
One way to improve your arm swing is to practice the Arm Swing Drill. For this drill you will need to find a padded wall or fence. This will help you keep your arm swing tight.
Stand parallel with your hips facing the wall. Work on reaching high toward the sky and finish by throwing the ball into your glove.
If you would like an extra challenge, you can move closer to the wall and repeat the drill. Repeating this movement 10 to 15 times a day can help you achieve a good, strong arm swing.
