I bought this for my wife to learn how to fly fish. She paired it with a Fenwick flyrod and was fishing in no time. Caught her first bass on her second cast and her second bass on her third cast ever fishing with it! I borrowed it from her and caught a bass and a hybrid bluegill with it as well. Very nice reel!

I bought this reel about 2 months ago and so far, it's done great! I bought this reel for saltwater use and it has held up fine. I 've caught everything from edge of slot puppy drum off the beach to small specks and striper in the sound. I can happily report that thus far, I have had no problems with the unsealed drag. As far as the drag's performance, it could n't work better. the drag knob is easy to adjust while playing a fish and has a nice clicky- ness to it so you do n't over adjust it. I did get a little sand in there while fishing from the beach, but after removing the spool and giving it a thorough rinse it works like new. My few complaints are rather petty. The first being that the finish seems to come off fairly easily. while having it in the canoe with me it was sliding around and the matte black finish rubbed off a bit around the rim. however, it's hardly noticeable and only cosmetic. Secondly, the rubbery handle occasionally catches the fly line when I 'm casting. It juts out a bit more than I care for.

When selecting a disc drag fly reel, consider features such as the drag system's smoothness and adjustability, which can greatly affect your fishing experience. Look for lightweight materials that enhance portability without sacrificing durability. Additionally, check the reel's retrieval rate and line capacity to ensure it meets your fishing needs.
A disc drag system in fly reels utilizes a series of discs to create friction, allowing for smooth and consistent drag pressure when fighting fish. This system helps to control the line tension, preventing breakage and allowing for better control during the fight. Understanding how this mechanism works can help you choose a reel that best suits your fishing style.
Disc drag fly reels offer several advantages, including smoother drag performance and better heat dissipation during prolonged fights. They typically provide more consistent drag pressure, which is crucial for landing larger fish. Additionally, these reels often allow for finer adjustments, giving anglers greater control over their line.
Disc drag fly reels are versatile and can be used for various types of fishing, including freshwater and saltwater applications. However, the specific reel's design and drag strength may make it more suitable for certain species or fishing conditions. It's important to consider the type of fish you are targeting and the environment in which you will be fishing.
Disc drag fly reels are often made from materials like aluminum and composite plastics, which provide a balance of strength and weight. Aluminum reels are typically more durable and resistant to corrosion, making them ideal for saltwater use. The choice of materials can impact the reel's overall performance, including its weight, drag smoothness, and longevity.
